Cartledge Reports 55 Bales from Santa Helena River Cotton
Wayne Cartledge, former county commissioner and lone cotton farmer in Brewster County, reports 55 bales picked from 159 acres of river bottom cotton at Santa Helena with about 20 bales more expected. Leaf worm damaged the crop but no other insects. He notes pioneering work in land prep and irrigation and says a yield of half a bale per acre would be excellent. He warns his gun is set up awaiting missing press parts and suggests the river section could support a larger cotton industry if irrigable land is developed. Potential 75 bales at 500 pounds each could yield a sizable sum plus 35 tons of cottonseed.
