Glenn Burgess, longtime Graham chamber of commerce manager, was elected secretary manager of the Alpine chamber of commerce effective Nov 1, succeeding Nelson Lee who resigned. Burgess, born near Lubbock, studied at the University of Texas and has prior chamber experience in Lubbock Center Gonzales Littlefield and Graham. He has organized the International Parks Highway Association and promoted the Possum Kingdom dam project. He is married with two children and active in church and Rotary. The Bahama islands trade with the United States exceeds four million dollars in imports and seven hundred thousand in exports year.
Information from Tax Collector Clarence Hord urges all motor vehicle owners to obtain a certificate of title before January 1, 1942, or risk inability to operate or register vehicles after that date. Title must be presented at registration. filing for title requires proof of ownership. A bill of sale or 1941 license receipt suffices as proof. Do it now to avoid last minute delays amid National Defense Retailers week.
Austin reports a week to ten day delay in start of issuing new Texas licenses scheduled for Oct. 1. Paper stock arrived late prompting printing and distribution time. Renewals under 480000. numbers above 450000 later. Applications via Highway Patrol, sheriff offices, banks, or DPS Austin with 50 cent payment. no personal checks. No road test required for renewals unless prior traffic issues.
A Spitz named Nuisance near Fort Davis has mothered 151 pups over almost 14 years. Owner G. L. Holland of Dublin Texas says the dog will be 14 next February and belongs to his son Gordon. Ripley’s Believe It Or Not required sworn affidavit confirming the record. Nuisance remains active and reportedly nonmippy, unlike some Spitz stereotypes.
National Letter-Writing Week will be observed October 5 to 11. The Post Office Department urges maintaining service levels at military and naval establishments and extending facilities to new industrial fields. It emphasizes the importance of first class mail as a backbone of revenue and a source of comfort for service members.
A historic gathering brought FBI officers and local law enforcement together in a courtroom to plan national and local defense. Participants included D A Bryce, special agent in charge in El Paso, and R H Schneider, plus Texas Defense Guard leaders and county officials, all under FBI direction for quarterly nationwide conferences led by J Edgar Hoover.
About 125 people joined a Fall field trip to the Big Bend area sponsored by the West Texas Geological Society. The group traveled from Alpine to Marathon, Persimmon Gap, and Santa Helena canyon, spent a night in the Chisos Mountains CCC camp, then visited Study Butte mines Terlingua and Alpine. Dr. Ross A. Maxwell of the National Park Service led the tour with Vaughn C. Maley chairing the field trip committee. The Big Bend region is noted as a premier geological field area in the United States.

Last year's shipments of Ceylon products to the United States totaled 20.075 million dollars in value. Significant buyers and agencies reported strong demand for tea rubber and coconut products across several ports.
Sul Ross college announces a fall and winter recreation program to boost physical fitness for national defense. Coach B C Graves says activities include two weekly gym classes with boxing wrestling apparatus work and basketball, aviation minded training, tennis instruction, and a bowling league with up to eight teams and four weekly alley nights. Minor fees apply. bowling has designated hours for women and wives of club members bowl free beyond pinsetter costs. Interested citizens should apply to Coach Graves or James Sloan of the Alpine Recreational Assn.
Alfredo Leyva’s application to sell beer at the Old Woman’s Cafe in South Alpine was denied at a hearing before County Judge R B Slight. G Carruth and Dan Root of the Texas Liquor Control Board, who attended from Big Spring, recommended that the license not be granted.
A VA department organized defense shop training in Alpine public schools with 13 young men enrolling for an auto mechanics course. The 10 week program, starting around October 1, will be taught by Jack Johnson, with the first of four courses, and tools to arrive soon. Enrollees include Roy Jones, Ezequiel Rivera, Eldon Harrison, Lamont Stephens, Larry Miller, Felipe Valenzuela, Warren Mosley, D. J. Boyd, John R. Whiteside, Cecil LaBeff, Stanley Fulcher and George Hovey.
The second annual meeting of the Big Bend Baptist association will be at Alpine Baptist Church starting 10 oclock next Tuesday and running through Thursday. Nine churches from Fort Stockton to Alpine form the association formed two years ago to reduce travel for members. Fort Stockton moderator 8 F Marsh will preach the associational sermon. S M Swearingen of Marfa is clerk. WMU session runs Tuesday afternoon into night with Dr H H Moorhead of El Paso speaking on Foreign Missions in South America. Messengers from all churches will attend. Alpine hosts noon meetings in the basement each day.
Al pine Class B Bucks overcome MoNA Hans Class A 7-6 last Friday night in Monahans for their third straight win. Crawford scored after a third quarter fumble recovery, Bucks dominate with 65 plays and 10 first downs, while Monahans led by a late passing attack before Buck Ruled Ineligible Hank Chambers and Fred Slight shift to fill the void as the team prepares for a decisive Marfa game.
A rain which started shortly after noon last Tuesday and continued nearly all night added 2.07 inches of precipitation according to U S Weather Bureau records at Sul Ross College. The rainfall rose September totals to 5.99 inches, the month’s record, and increased the year’s total to 99 inches, more than double the usual annual average for the region.
There was no Rotary meeting held in Alpine yesterday due to the Highland fair opening at Marfa. A large percentage of members attended the parade and other day’s activities in Presidio. Alpine Rotarians in Marfa were expected to attend Marfa meetings yesterday.
A large crowd gathered in Marta Alpine for the 14th Highland fair and feeder sale. Miss LaRue Garnett led the parade with her duchesses while buyers and cattlemen arrived from Big Bend for a 10 am sale totaling about 4% carloads. Prizes were awarded for heifer, steer, and steer yearling classes, with trophies and a silver bowl for top champions. Tonight a rodeo and football game at Martin field Marfa will draw fans, and Sul Ross will be the official marching band again.
A district PTA meeting of the 15th district board of the Texas Congress of Parent Teacher Associations was held in Fort Davis at Mr. Clark home. Attendees included board members from Alpine Pecos Sierra Blanca Van Horn Saragosa Monahans Fort Stockton and Kermit with Mrs Martnet Humble state vice president presiding an emphasis on home visits and citizen outreach for medical aid and other services.
