Fort Davis Masonic lodge Jeff Davis No. 896 marked its 50th anniversary with a September 24 barbecue at Point of Rocks, drawing about 75 members and guests. Speakers recalled Fort Davis’s first lodge of 1884 and the second lodge founded in 1904, naming early petitioners and leaders. Out‑of‑town visitors included past masters from El Paso Pecos Alpine and Marfa.

City Wells Pump 18 Million Gallons of Water Past 30 Days
Continued dry weather and near summer temperatures kept city pumps near capacity. Meter readings show nearly 18 million gallons pumped in 30 days with the Kokernot lodge area wells and South hill producing the largest shares.
Rain Taps Alpine With Light Moisture Briefly
Light rain fell in Alpine on Wednesday starting around 5 a.m. and continuing intermittently for several hours. The shower totaled 0.23 inches, the first noticeable moisture since September 6 when 0.18 inches was recorded.

Enrollment at Sul Ross College has risen 45 percent since September 1952 when Dr. Wildenthal became president. Fall totals climbed from 522 in 1952 to 618 in 1953 and expected to reach 760 this month, led by gains in Freshman Sophomore and Junior classes.

Presbytery Meets In Alpine Hosts El Paso Delegation
The First Presbyterian church of Alpine hosted the Presbytery of El Paso during a Tuesday and Wednesday session. Delegates heard reports from committees on stewardship and education, pensions, and announced a December 6 seminar at Altura Presbyterian El Paso. The body elected Rev C W Newbill as one of three minister delegates to the Texas Synod meeting in San Antonio October 12–14. The Presbytery adjourned to reconvene January 25 at Bethlehem Presbyterian in El Paso.

The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion home with Mrs. Jane Coats presiding. New City Well Tests at 85 GPM Near Kokernot Lodge
The city’s third well below Kokernot lodge produced 85 gallons per minute during an 18 hour test started Monday. The water level fell from within 20 ft of the top to 315 ft 35 ft from bottom and held. A 50 gallon pump will be installed and the well is expected to add about 75 000 gallons daily, or roughly two million monthly, to the city supply. The first two wells in the area already pumped over three million gallons for the period ending last week’s meter readings.

The formal dedication planned for Big Bend National Park is postponed to fall next year due to President Eisenhower's unavailability for this fall. Dr. Bryan Wildenthal of St. Ross College says plans continue and the National Park service gains time to improve arrangements for a large crowd. The event will likely be held a year from now with an executive committee drawn from Southwest Texas towns.
