Sportsman's Club Plans Deer Contest After Turkey Shoot

Big Bend Sportsman's Club outlines a deer hunting contest after a successful turkey shoot drawing 100 participants and 200 visitors. Johnny Carpenter, 10, Alpine, won two turkeys and a ham. prizes include rifles and a sportsman's electric razor. Entry blanks arrive December 5 or 6 with deer season December 8 to 13. A March of Dimes shoot is planned for January.

Big Bend Pistol Club Plans Dec 16 Shoot at Presidio

The Big Bend Pistol Club will hold a shoot on Sunday December 16 at the Presidio range. Major event will be the 45 caliber pistol with S B Hendrix of Eagle Pass winning last shoot’s 3 gun aggregate 1392. Fabian of Alpine and Casner of Presidio led expert and sharpshooter classes with scores across multiple calibers. Prizes included Sterling silver teaspoons and coasters.

Henry C LaBeff Laid To Rest

Funeral services for Henry C. LaBeff 71 were held at 4 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Clanton Newbill officiating. Interment followed in Elm Grove Cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers included Jim Francous Neville Haynes Bill Sohl Dave Elliott Frank McCollum Fritz Weyerts Knox Reid and Eric Williams. Out of town relatives and friends attended from Austin Odessa Brownsville Andrews Midland and Marfa. LaBeff came to Alpine in 1928 and ran a service station and served Brewster County as deputy sheriff for many years.

Texas Arizona Merges With Alamo Motor Lines

The Interstate Commerce Commission approved the acquisition of Alamo Motor Lines by Texas Arizona Motor Freight Inc of El Paso. Texas Arizona runs El Paso to the West Coast while Alamo serves Houston to El Paso. Charles W Bishop in Alpine noted Alton Davenport joined as a pickup and delivery. Davenport recently received a T year safe driving award after 68 000 miles without a chargeable accident.

Alpine church founder Mrs Gillett dies aged 86

Mrs F E Gillett 86 longtime Alpine resident who organized the Episcopal Church in 1908 died Monday in an El Paso hospital. Services were held at St James Episcopal Church with interment in Elm Grove. Survived by three sons John Edwin and Irving and three daughters Thalia Frances and Mary. She helped found the Alpine Study Club and Davis Mountain Federation.

Felix Cobos Dies At 33 In Alpine Funeral Rites

Felix Cobos aged 33 died Saturday in an El Paso hospital. Funeral services were held in Alpine Sunday. He is survived by his mother Mrs Martina Cobos Alpine four sisters Mrs Dolores De Anda Mrs H L Edson and Mrs Guillermo de la Rosa Alpine and Mrs G S Armijo of El Paso six brothers Cal Cobos Austin Ben Margarito Cobos Alpine Gabriel Cobos Midland Jesse Cobos Odessa and Mack Cobos Marfa. Mr and Mrs Joe Bellaman and children were to spend Thanksgiving in San Antonio.

Johnny Carpenter Wins Turkey Shoot At Big Bend Club

Johnny Carpenter ten year old fourth grader son of Mr and Mrs Harry Carpenter of Alpine won two turkeys and a ham at the Big Bend Sportsman's Club turkey shoot. He broke a ham string with a 22 rifle to claim the prize and also won the skeet event against nine adults using shotguns. He has hunted deer since age six and will seek his fourth back when the season opens.

Supervisors of the Big Bend Soil Conservation District announce the 12th Annual Fort Worth Press Save The Soil and Save Texas awards for 1987. Alpine and Marathon high school students may enter with essays on Youths Stake in Soil Conservation. The state winner earns a paid vacation to Colorado.

Bridge Across Creek Expected To Be Built

The State Highway Commission approved a 100000 project to pave a 5 mile rural road between Study Butte and Terlingua in southern Brewster County. A bridge over Terlingua Creek is likely as surveys begin next September for the river road segment linking Big Bend National Park and Presidio. paving now extends from Presidio westward about 20 miles with full paving planned in the coming years.

George W. Miller, superintendent of Big Bend National Park, addressed the Houston Chamber of Commerce conventions committee last Monday noon at the Ben Milam Hotel.
