The Valley stayed busy during Thanksgiving with McAllen Brownsville Port Isabel Padre Island and Kingsville all active. News notes include Big Boy Williams stopping in Alpine praising the area and a local shopper reporting 11 000 miles on tubeless tires.
Bobby Hanson a 23 year old Sul Ross student suffered chest and head injuries after falling about 60 feet while exploring a cave on a cliff between Alpine and Fort Davis. He remained unconscious in Lockhart Clinic but was expected to recover barring complications. Freeman and medical teams aided his rescue with a tracheostomy performed at the scene.
The Alpine Bucks meet Pecos Eagles in first round Monahans tournament action with a 2:00 p.m. tipoff after a 78-47 warmup win at Marathon. Alpine aims to counter Pecos height advantage led by Bubba Ephraim and Jim Simmons while Don Burgess and Charlie Valenzuela anchor the forwards and Elisio Hernandez with Joe Sanchez handle guard duties.
The Giant will be shown at Granada Theatre in Alpine for eight days starting Christmas Day. Owner Fred M. Jack says the film will play three daily showings at 1 p.m. 4 15 p.m. and 7 30 p.m. Alpine and Marfa residents appear in George Stevens adaptation of Edna Ferber novel.
Alpine Buck Band will compete in the UIL music contest in Odessa tomorrow around 3 30 pm. The band has 56 members, 38 high school students and the rest seventh and eighth grade. Alpine faces 11 junior high and 22 senior high schools in Class A with Marfa Sanderson Big Lake Iran Cohoma. Alpine entrants include ensemble and solo twirling by Sue Bounds Mary Ella Vanney Willa Dell Hilbrich Harriet Carpenter and Totsy Nell Richardson.
C B Shurley aged 68 brother in law of Mrs Jess Gilmer of Alpine died of a heart attack in San Antonio Friday and was buried there Saturday. Mr and Mrs Gilmer attended the services. Shurley had often visited Alpine.
The Alpine Chamber of Commerce will elect four new directors this week. Ballots were mailed to members and must be returned by Saturday December 8. Eligible members may run unless they have already served a 3 year term. Current board includes Dick Rogers Forrest Walker Jack Stowell Bill Winter John Whiteside Jeff Graham Hugh White Felix McGaughy D D Thomas Marvin Kay and Bill Soa.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Van Horn for Elmer J. Taylor ex sheriff of Brewster County who died in an El Paso hospital on Saturday December 2. Interment was in Van Horn Cemetery. Born February 19 1882 in Beeville Texas he served as Brewster County sheriff from 1938 to 1940. He also worked as a cattle inspector for the Agriculture Department and was Van Horn city marshal for years. He resided in Van Horn the past six years and is survived by his widow three daughters four brothers four sisters and three grandsons. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers are named.
Sul Ross cage crew to host Tarpons of Corpus Christi and Trinity University Tigers in a pair of non conference games. Lobos rise to 5-1 after 69-65 win over Trinity with Al Schomber 22 points 19 rebounds and Paul Ingles 14. Texas Western handed Sul Ross a 4 point setback in a prior non league game.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Ann Miles, longtime Alpine resident born November 21 1872 in Illinois, were conducted in Livingston Funeral Home and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. She left three sons Francis James and Joseph, a daughter Lucille Williams, seven grandchildren, and was laid to rest in Elm Grove Cemetery. Out of town mourners included families from Odessa Gail and Pecos.
Far West Texas Baptist churches in District 7 baptised 1607 converts and contributed $182655 for the Southern Baptist cooperative program during the year. The district includes four associations and 69 churches with 28993 members across Crockett Winkler counties and surrounding areas.
Sul Ross University hosts its first intramural rodeo this Saturday December 8 with two shows at 3 pm and 7 pm. A. L. Long of Roswell New Mexico will supply the stock for six major events. E E Turner Sul Ross Rodeo Club sponsor says national championship hopes are strong and top collegiate rodeo competitors will participate at Sul Ross Arena east of Alpine.
Light rain fell in Alpine and the Big Bend area yesterday morning, bringing a slight moisture after several weeks of dryness. Skies cleared before noon as conditions returned to sun.
Paul Gooden, Alpine well driller, awarded the contract to drill a test well for the City on the Roberts tract in Sunny Glen. Drilling to begin by Jan 1, 2400 feet west of the Daugherty well, 12 inch bore with 10 inch casing to 400 feet, at 4.45 dollars per foot with casing at 5 dollars per foot. Charles Watson and Nolan Shuler were other bidders. Ashley Classen of El Paso is water engineer. Jim DeCook of the U S Geological Survey will take samples.
The Big Bend Sportsman’s Club Alpine hosts its fourth annual black tail deer hunting contest with three prizes. Hunters may enter for $1 and register where designated, weighing and measuring their kill at a local station. The season runs to Dec 13 with one black tail and one white tail per hunter. prizes include a rifle, an electric shaver, and a 22 automatic rifle. See Davis Mountains for white tail deer abundance.
Mrs. Thomas B. Shackleford 73 a pioneer Marathon ranching figure died Tuesday in Pecos. Funeral held at First Methodist Church Marathon with Rev. Jack Jones officiating. Burial in Marathon Cemetery directed by Livingston Funeral Home. Born June 15 1883 Leakey Texas she married Thomas B. Shackleford in 1910 and had three children.
A Fort Collins engineer from Television Communication Engineers Inc notes Twin Sisters as an ideal site for a TV translator station after tests last week. The Honor System TV Association has ordered equipment to be installed there if enough advance subscriptions arrive. further details appear in the Page 6-A advertisement.
