Root Plowing Demonstration At Nevill Ranch Draws 200

About 200 people toured the Nevill Ranch 25 miles south of Alpine for a root plowing demonstration hosted by Big Bend Soil Conservation District supervisors and a chicken barbecue. Visitors included ranch hands, businesspeople, and students from Sul Ross State College and Alpine High School. Central Texas Machinery Co. of Odessa and Caterpillar Tractor Co. supplied a D-2 with subsoiler and a D-8 with root plows and seeding gear to pull up brush and break crust, preparing a seed bed as the D-8 broadcast blue panic and other grasses. The land is said to hold more water after plowing.

Methodists Plan College Night at Alpine Church

The First Methodist Church in Alpine will host College Recognition Night on Sunday. Rev. Carl Lawson says Joe Bellamah and his 45 piece Sul Ross band will perform sacred music as three Methodist college boys conduct the service. The public is invited.

Alpine Officials Attend Civil Defense Meeting in Odessa

Alpine officials led by Mayor Hugh White attended a civil defense and disaster relief meeting in Odessa last Tuesday. The gathering outlined emergency authority transfer rules with mayors or the county judge directing local operations first, then state resources through the Highway Patrol district as needed. A demonstration on Presumption No. 2 showed coordination between city county and state agencies with speakers including Capt. Joe S. Fletcher and C. O. Layne.

City Plans Sunny Glen Wells and Roberts Land Water Agreement

City of Alpine plans bids for Sunny Glen wells with Ashley Classen reviewing a contract on Largent and Roberts lands. The Roberts deal guarantees $2500 yearly for 20 years if 200 GPM is produced, with terms on termination and early drilling rights starting Jan 1 1957.

Thanksgiving Service Planned by Alpine Churches

The Alpine Ministerial Alliance will sponsor a community-wide Thanksgiving service at 8 am Thursday, November 29, at First Presbyterian Church. Principal speaker will be Dr. George Thomason of Sul Ross State College. Rev. Clanton Newbill notes the event offers a formal opportunity to give thanks amid a busy day. Many local business houses will close for Thanksgiving. federal offices observed last Thursday.

Area students from Alpine Barnhart Fort Davis Marathon Marfa Ozona Presidio Sanderson Sierra Blanca and Tornillo visit Sul Ross State College on Saturday November 24 to watch Our Town with a 2 pm matinee and 7 pm evening show. H C LaBeff 71 Dies of Heart Attack in Alpine

H C LaBeff 71 a lifelong Alpine resident since 1928 died of a heart attack in a local hospital yesterday afternoon. He is survived by his widow two sons Ray of Alpine and Cecil of Odessa four brothers and two sisters and six grandchildren. Funeral services were pending with Livingston Funeral Home.

Fleming Waters of Lone Star Mercury Corp reports a new 45 pound per ton mercury ore vein in the Louisa Mine area of Terlingua District Brewster County. The firm plans 40 to 50 flasks weekly at about 257 dollars per flask, with 35 to 40 miners and a 9000 dollar monthly payroll as $289000 already spent on Brewster County properties.

Los Angeles Examiner and The Christian Science Monitor highlighted Big Bend National Park in Texas with travel features and photos. Slim Barnard of the Examiner produced a full page piece with images from the Rio Grande region and the park’s scenery, noting December offers milder weather for a winter visit.
