The Alpine Public Schools board and Central Ward school hosted a Monday PTA session led by Mr. M. P. Slover. Supt. Governor Coke Stevenson designates November 19 to December 25, 1945 as the period for selling Christmas Seals in Texas. The proclamation urges public support for the Texas Tuberculosis Association and county affiliates to fund health programs against a communicable disease that caused 3006 deaths in the state last year.
Local names report multiple veterans and service members in the Pacific and European theaters. Perry L. Ross among ship crews logged 257495 miles aboard the USS Chemung across eight oceans. Marvin C Adams discharged after 36 months at Little Creek. James L Crawford back from two and a half years in the Pacific to Camp Wallace. Douglas Bennett returning from two years in New Guinea and the Philippines to Fort Sam Houston. Charles Matthews home after nearly four years with the Second Armored Division, D-Day landings, Purple Heart and Belgian Fourragere. Lola Elis and Anne Elis discharged from the Waves, Jimmie Elis from the Marines after three years in major Pacific battles including Iwo Jima. E E McGlasson visited after Seabees discharge. Calvin Hollinshead discharged after Okinawa service. James C Hudson returned from ten months in the Mariana Islands as B-29 crew chief with 47 missions. Continued on last page.
More hunters are in the field this season than last according to Capt. Ray Williams of the State Game Department. Deer totals may exceed last season as the season opened west of the Pecos drawing many hunters from distant points. Local hunting has increased while paid hunters are down about a third. A cold snap improved hunting and helped bring game home. Governor Coke Stevenson and Weaver Al er hunted on Kokernet ranch north of Fort Davis. The deer season closes tomorrow.
Dr W W Jackson regional director of the USO and Trinity University vice president will visit Alpine this weekend. He will be guest speaker at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 11 o clock. The public is invited to hear him and learn about investing surplus cash in government bonds to help curb inflation.
Alpine businesses closed or observed Sunday hours on Thanksgiving Day. A union service at 8 a.m. at the Christian church, led by Rev R L Wittner. Locals hunted, traveled, and visited nearby towns while city schools and Sul Ross College closed early for the holidays and will reopen Monday.
Sport’s Sweet Shop will reopen tomorrow under new management announced by A V Gunn the proprietor. Gunn opened the shop in 1989 and after army service from 1942 to last year he bought the business back. The quarters are renovated with a new fountain fixtures and the shop will offer counter service home made ice cream and sandwiches.
L. Curtoray Campoell, formerly at Belton and Alpine, is transferred to Fort Stockton as agent for the railway company, a promotion from assistant in multiple offices. His wife is Julia Faye Perdue, daughter of Doyle Perdue of San Angelo. Cecil Duncan Jr., petty officer C, at Lake City Florida, reportedly improving after an appendectomy and pneumonia. His father F. C. Duncan returned from Lake City last week.

West Texas Class AA seniors will face Class A and B seniors in a game approved by Intercholastics League official Rode sey Kidd. Clyde Water and Gene McCollum will coach the Class AA team with Carl Coleman and Boren Hunter guiding the Class A and B squads. Players and coaches will train in Alpine on December 26, with local high school bands in attendance to add color. The Boosters have raised several thousand dollars to underwrite expenses and promote Sul Ross athletic programs.
West Main welcomes Atha's Drive-Inn in the old Matthews Cleaners building. Bill Atha reports strong early reception and plans to hire more help. The renovated site offers cafe and fountain service plus a filling station. Atha, former general foreman at the air field, urges investing in government bonds to curb inflation.
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Little Princess will be staged at Sul Ross auditorium by Clare Tree Major Children’s Theatre Company of New York. The 1902 London debut led to a 1903 New York run. past child actors include Pauling Chase and Mabel Taliaferro. Alpine Parent-Teacher Association, led by Mrs. T. H. Etheridge, organized the event.
