The famed country star T Texas Tyler known as The Man With a Million Friends will headline a gospel service at 7 30 p m Thursday Nov 21 at the Assembly of God Church in Tyler Rev Walter W Esch pastor says Tyler will recount his move from Grand Ole Opry touring to preaching the Gospel and will play guitar and sing gospel songs.
An Odessa San Angelo editorial attacks Sul Ross State College Alpine over a $31 315 computer purchase approved by regents led by Newton Gresham. Writers argue the tube type machine saves costs and speeds college operations amid calls to shift appropriations to Odessa or San Angelo.
Sul Ross State College presents a double feature of operas The Sunday Excursion by Sundgaard Wilder and The Medium by Menotti in the Little Theatre at 8 15 p m. The SRSC Music Dept directed by Dr Robert Calder features a cast including Johnie Mae Feist Judy Irby Jack Bowers and Tim. Admission 75 cents adults 50 cents students SRSC students admitted free with activity cards. A convocation delegate Fort Davis Hal Burnett joins Alpine Fort Davis Masonic lodges for the annual Waco event.
M. L. Hopson a longtime Alpine leader in education business and American Legion died Saturday morning November 16 in an El Paso hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held November 18 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Bristol and Rev. Earl Dumn presiding. Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born February 21 1896 in Comanche Texas and educated at Roby and Hardin-Simmons University. Hopson served in World War I, later taught in Alpine and at Sul Ross College, then ran Trans-Pecos Abstract Co. with his wife Edith. He was active in the Masonic Lodge Baptist Church and the American Legion Big Bend Post No. 79. He is survived by Edith his wife, brother W S Hopson of Roby, six grandchildren and other relatives.

Sul Ross State College hosts its first intramural rodeo in years at the arena east of Alpine off the Fort Stockton highway. Two performances begin 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday with admission 1 for adults and 50 cents for students. Judges include Jim Moore and Roger Tucker. Events include calf roping, bull riding, bareback bronc, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, ribbon roping, goat tying, barrel racing and wild cow milking.
Alpine chapter of Future Farmers of America entered four teams in the Big Bend District FFA leadership contests at Fort Stockton last Saturday and won two first-place honors. The greenhand quiz team led by Frank Snow with 283 points out of 300, and Frank Snow as high point individual with 98 of 100. The Alpine radio team won first for its program on The Use of Tranquilizers in the Field of Animal Production. Alpine team members included Johnny Carpenter Mike Edmondson and Rick Dawkins.
James Kirkpatrick rector of Episcopal churches in Pecos and Fort Stockton will celebrate Holy Communion at 7 30 p m Tuesday November 26 in St James Episcopal Church He will also celebrate Christmas morning at St James noting the parish work in Pecos and Fort Stockton.
Two Alpine High School players earned district honors in 7-AA selections. Elisio Leyva was a unanimous defensive pick and Leonel Cordova made the defensive unit. Several others received honorable mention on offense and defense across multiple schools including Crane Sonora McCamey Stanton and others.
Sul Ross State College travels to Brownwood for a Saturday afternoon game against Howard Payne in a bid to avoid the Lone Star Conference cellar. The 1-6-1 Lobos seek a win or even a narrow loss to keep HPC from gaining control, while Howard Payne aims to protect a strong homecoming record and snap a rough conference stretch.
Mrs. Dorothy L. McBride district 5 Pilot International will make an official visit to the Pilot Club of Alpine on Wednesday November 27. A banquet at 7 30 p m in the Holland Hotel ballroom honors her.
The city council, at Tuesday's meeting, banned parking on the north side of Main Street from Suh to 7th Streets to relieve congestion before the Central School Cafeteria. The council also discussed a traffic light at the S Highway 90 and Fe Davis Highway intersection (Stn Street at Holland Avenue).
A group including Boun family members and Mrs Ann Hood visited in El Paso over the weekend to see relatives Mrs Duay Evans Mr Evans M Bounds brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs Leonor Appleton of Deming NM and Mr and Mrs B Stowell of Lubbock They attended a Texas Tech football game on Saturday.
