Brew ter County Red Cross chapter executive council met November 2 at the chamber of commerce. An audited year’s finances showed a $1000 balance. Production chairman Mrs Holland reported sewing quotas finished ahead of schedule and hospital supplies for the air base were provided. Dr. Berkeley as Home Service chairman handled many requests from servicemen and families. Miss McGregor resigned as junior Red Cross head. Publicity chair Mrs Hord noted POW pack letter information. Next meeting is the first Tuesday of December at the chamber. Dr. Berkeley will present casework. Reporter Mrs Thos Dean, formerly Alpine, now San Antonio resident, visited J F Nichols and family.
Alpine unit will stage a public demonstration at Jackson field tonight at 8 15 showing smoke screen protection tear gas barricade responses riot formations and training drills including booby traps and explosives. The weeklong Texas State Guard activities aim to gauge public interest with free admission and optional contributions at the gates.
Capt. Ray Williams of the State Game department warns that no hunting is allowed in the Big Bend National Park area of southern Brewster county. Licenses required. black tail and white tail deer have bag limits of two bucks with season dates from next Tuesday to December 15. Bear season runs November 1 to December 31 and quail season is November 16 to December 31 with a daily bag limit of 12 and possession limit of 24. Gasoline rationing may reduce hunter numbers this year.
Lubbock reports from district OPA officials that Washington has issued no extension on sugar stamps 15 and 16, dispelling rumors of validity. Consumers with unused stamps may exchange them at their ration board for certificates to obtain sugar up to 10 pounds per person, while canning sugar is allocated 25 pounds annually for the fiscal year ending February 29.
Fall shipments of cattle from the Alpine area are nearly complete with most stock already moved. Officials estimate the total will match the usual figure as calves head to California and the Corn Belt feed lots. Calves sold around 12 to 13 cents with feeder cows at about six cents. winter grass on Alpine ranges will be scarce due to little summer rainfall.
The Alpine PTA plans a meeting next Monday November 15 at 8 45 in the high school auditorium. Dr C B Casey history professor at Sul Ross will discuss Freedom in Learning. Junior high students will perform a program and child care will be provided for attending mothers.
Sgt Delbert Bowles of Courtland Alabama has been made assistant band director and selected to attend officer candidate school. He is the son of Nay Bowles of Alpine, a pioneer resident. Delbert graduated from Alpine High School and Sul Ross College and studied at Westminster Choir College in Princeton New Jersey before entering the service.

Lt and Mrs Wayne Walker visiting relatives in Alpine and Marfa. Walker transferred from Fort Benning to Louisiana.
Alpine FFA boys plan a fats collection Monday at 9 a.m. as part of a community service project. They will call at homes in pairs during rationing, asking residents to place fats in suitable containers for pickup. If missed, send a postcard or letter to the Alpine Future Farmer chapter.
A large group of civilian employees at the pilot school will be eligible for service awards to be conferred by the War department next month. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson has authorized the awards for civilian employees contributing significantly to the war effort. The decorations, lapel ribbons in blue and silver bearing the Air Forces emblem, will be awarded across all pilot school departments. Mr. and Mrs. Harper Sparks of Del Rio visited his brother C. M. Red Sparks and family here last weekend.
Week end brought winter as Indian summer faded with a hard freeze Sunday morning the first of the season. Sub freez ing temperatures persisted with thick ice daily and clear skies notable. At Fort Davis temperatures dropped from 56 to 22 with local variations from 16 to 42 degrees. Snow touched mountain tops and ice formed on open water with camps and observatories reporting snow. Specific ranch readings ranged from 18 to 42 degrees, lowest at Merrill and 28 at Frank Jones Taylor ranch, while Willis McCutcheon logged 42 and Jim McCutcheon 34 at 8 am Sunday.
Brewster county trails the United War Chest quota by about 1,250 as of yesterday. Total contributions reached 3,750 of a 5,000 goal, with Marathon and river country not yet reporting. Citizens not solicited urged to give via canvassing committee members or the treasurer at the First National Bank.
Dr G P Smith head of the department of education returned from San Angelo where he organized two extension courses. Ten persons registered for audio visual education to be offered and twelve for postwar flameman. Both classes will meet.
H W Morelock announced Scheetz and Co will present a magic show at Sul Ross auditorium tomorrow at 10 15 am with no admission charge. Public is invited.
Mrs G K Lange had a major operation last Thursday. Mrs Paul Weyrand of Marfa underwent a major operation last Friday. J P Nichols had an appendectomy last Saturday. Mrs R H Johns of Presidio underwent an appendectomy Monday.
