Alpine High School students Glynn Strom and Cecelia Turner were honored at a Pilot Club of Alpine luncheon for safe and sane driving. Glynn received the Summer Award and Cecelia the Safe-Teen Driver of the Month for September, presented by Pilot advisor Mrs. H. J. McBride. These awards start a new year toward a Driver of the Year award in May, with law enforcement continuing summer observations.

Scout Drive Opens Monday Kickoff Luncheon Set
A kickoff luncheon for the annual Girl Scout drive will be held at the Ponderosa Restaurant at 12 noon Monday November 15. All volunteers are invited to attend with Miss Joe Harvey executive director for District 6 as speaker. Contributions may be sent to the Permian Basin Girl Scout Council Alpine P O Box 108 if not contacted by a volunteer.

Free Parking Period Okayed by City Council
City Council approved a temporary parking policy at the Alpine Chamber of Commerce merchants request. Parking meters will be out of operation from December 17 to December 24 to ensure downtown shoppers have ample spots. Local retailers urged downtown workers not to occupy spaces all day for holiday traffic.

Sul Ross president Dr. Norman L. McNeil told the State Teachers Colleges Board of Regents in San Marcos of a proposed land swap with Alpine. Alpine and the Texas Highway Department seek 2.88 acres for Highway 90 improvement in exchange for 14 acres mainly east of Jackson Field. The 12 foot campus edge strip and a part of the southwest corner would be traded. The board urged coordination with the local planning board and would consider the exchange at the January meeting. The board also approved Jessen, Jensen, Millhouse, Greeven and Crume of Austin to redesign the Sul Ross museum into classroom space, with plans and construction to begin soon.
