Alpine to Host McCamey Friday Election in CC Building

Alpine Chamber of Commerce directors endorse the city council's call for a 1 percent local sales tax. Residents will vote next Tuesday November 14 at the Chamber building, polls 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. A CC spokesman says the tax spreads city service costs fairly as city needs rise with growth. annual cost estimates show higher taxes for larger incomes.

Fritz Weyerts Laid to Rest

Fritz Ernest Weyerts 75 lifelong Alpine resident died Saturday night November 4 at home apparently from a heart attack. Services were held November 6 at First Methodist Church with Masonic graveside rites in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include wife two daughters one son ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Travel Writers Attend Big Bend Area Tour Dinner

Travel writers visiting the Big Bend area will be honored at a 4 p.m. informal dinner Friday Nov. 10 at the Stradley-Gage Ranch. The event caps the fourth Travel Writer's Tour sponsored by the Texas Tourist Development Agency with writers arriving in El Paso Nov. 6 and visiting McDonald Observatory Davis Mountains State Park Fort Davis and Big Bend National Park before returning to El Paso.

Veterans Day activities planned in Alpine by VFW and American Legion

Veterans Day events in Alpine Saturday November 11 include a 10 30 a m memorial service at the High School Auditorium with L N Kirkpatrick of Eden Texas as principal speaker. A public barbecue at the Legion Home follows at noon, plates 1 for adults 75c for children. A dance at 8 p m featuring Jimmie Davies and his Western band ends late. Veterans urged to wear old uniforms or decorations.

Gulf Will Drill Test Well on Pate Ranch Near Alpine

Gulf Oil Corp plans a wildcat drill on the Parr Pate Ranch about eight miles northwest of Alpine with spudding expected after November 20. The test is on Section 80 west of Highway 67. Apache Corp. of Midland completed a 1300 foot test on Section 1313 two miles south of the new Gulf site, with new gas shows after earlier findings.

Texas Amendment Vote Set for Nov 11 in Brewster County

Six proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution will be voted on Saturday November 11. All Brewster County polling places will be open including Alpine Pet 1 W Court House Pet 1 E Chamber of Commerce Pet 2 Library Centennial School Marathon Terlingua and Big Bend National Park. Judge Felix McGaughy urged voting and timely return of election results for canvassing on Monday November 13.
