Alpine residents will vote in April 1960 on four proposed ordinances. Mayor W E Lockhart lists the measures including a leash requirement for all dogs kept on leash or penned.
U S Senator Ralph Yarborough announced that the Board of Regents of Texas State Teachers Colleges should vote to allow students in Suines State College and five other colleges to join the National Defense Education Act loan plan. He noted about 50 Texas colleges participate and Texas students have received over 3 million dollars in loans, with a total need of 140 923 shown for Sul Ross and five state colleges last year. The city will pave Main Avenue from the hospital west to Central School 47 feet wide with curbs and 10 000 lumen lighting at each corner. Engineering by M W Collie of Midland and surveying by County Surveyor Tom Carney. Concrete slabs will span two creek dips as work proceeds.
James Mickler of the Western Livestock Commission Co. San Angelo reports a 1000 head Angus and Hereford stocker cow sale. The sale Tuesday features strictly good cows, including many young cows from West Texas herds, with age grouping and pregnancy testing unless near calving.

Funeral services were held at 3 p m Sunday from Our Lady of Peace Church for Se vero Ramos 73 pioneer resident who died Saturday at his home Born in 1886 in Presidio County he was reared by the O Wilsons and worked on Brewster County ranches He survived by wife Epimenia Ramos 3 sisters 4 brothers 4 daughters and 18 grandchildren A son Sgt Elpidio Ramos was killed in World War II and the VFW Post in Alpine is named for him Burial was at Latin American Cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge
Janis French daughter of Mr and Mrs Warren French has been chosen as Sweetheart of the Future Farmers of America chapter for the 1959 60 school year VA Instructor R M Brown said the Big Bend District FFA Sweetheart election will be held in Alpine at noon Saturday Nov 14 in the Holland House Nine schools will participate.
Rev Charles L Conder, vicar of St James Alpine since 1957, will become dean of San Diego Convocation in Los Angeles Diocese on December 1. He also served St Pauls Marfa and tutored Episcopal students at Sul Ross. Final service for him in Alpine is Thanksgiving morning. The Conder family will depart after services. successor to be named by Bishop Kin solving of Albuquerque.
Centennial Pee Wee football boys invited to participate in the Milk Bowl game at Van Horn at 7 p.m. Thursday Nov. 19. Coach Tony Ceraldi confirms the event. In the previous Rotary Bowl, Alpine hosted Van Horn as guest town.
School officials announced the newly bought bus from War Surplus Property has its first coat of school bus gold or orange applied by Bud Powers. The bus requires retouching and black trim with lettering to follow, which Powers will finish as time permits after his other duties.
The Sui Ross State College Lobos travel to Huntsville to face the Sam Houston team in a key Lone Star Conference game. Four teams share the lead after two upsets last weekend, with Lamar Tech Texas A&I East Texas State and Stephen F. Austin in a four way tie. East Texas routed Sul Ross 45 0 while Howard Payne upset Lamar Tech 14 12 and Austin defeated A I 24 7. In Saturday’s other games A I visits Lamar Tech at Kingsville East Texas hosts Southwest Texas at Commerce and Stephen F. Austin meets Howard Payne at Brownwood.
Alpine Bucks depart Alpine at 9 a m for Denver City to meet the Mustangs in a key District 4AA contest. Denver City, the 1959 District 4AA champion, offers a senior heavy lineup led by Ralph Townes and Bert Gravitt. The Bucks, led by quarterback Jerry Hensley, aim to upset the favored Mustangs. The teams arrive with minor injuries after a McCamey loss, and Alpine plans a return trip sleepover with bedding.
State Game Commissioner Henry Coffield of Marfa says antelope season west of the Pecos may have started 10 to 15 days too late. He suggests October 20 could be a better opening date and calls for discussions among ranchers, sportsmen, and officials before next year’s dates are set. Coffield’s term expired. he may or may not serve next year. Horns and mounting concerns noted but taxidermists can replace horns.
The State Game Commission set antelope season in the Trans Pecos west region from Nov 6 to 10. More hunters are expected in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains with previous years showing many bucks horned, and local totals for Alpine and Marfa areas reaching hundreds of antelope killed.
Local records show Alpine area received only .79 inches of precipitation in October. The heaviest rainfall occurred on the second and third, totaling .51 inches. The October total brings the year to 12.31 inches, well below last year’s 22.36 inches and below normal for the region.
The 8 inch Sunny Glen pipeline ditch has reached the western city limit. The pipe is laid about one mile behind the ditching machine with a rocky stretch dug mainly by bulldozer. Citizens may view the progress from Sunny Glen road. One mile of in city mains will join the system and another mile connects the 8 inch main to the reservoir on Sut Ross Hill.
A square dance is scheduled at the Sul Ross College gym at 8 p.m. Saturday November 7. The public is invited to attend.
School officials announced the Thanksgiving holiday schedule with break beginning Wednesday after 4 p.m. November 25 and ending Sunday November 28. Classes resume Monday November 30.
