Stephenson Rites Held

William Rward Stephenson 76 a resident of Alpine for 27 years died at home on May 22. Services were held at Elm Grove Cemetery with burial by Geeslin Funeral Home. A retired geologist born November 1 1886 in Arkansas he moved from Junction in 1936. Survived by his wife Maud Willis two daughters Melba Allen and Mae Mundy a son W Stephenson and a grandson Kitenen.

Loop Road Job Award Announced

A contract for 1.62 miles of Loop Road on State Highway 223 in Alpine was awarded to Hugh McMillan Inc of El Paso after the low bid of 65 664. Work from U. S. 90 to SH 118 includes grading structures base and wing and is set to take 75 working days with H L Sumatt Alpine resident engineer overseeing construction.

Park Work Contract Let for Big Bend Water and Sewer Projects

The National Park Service awarded a $158 372 58 contract for water and sewer extensions in Big Bend National Park. The project includes a sewage lagoon at the Chisos Mountains lower basin and water sewer upgrades with a trailer court at Rio Grande Village.

Pony League Set to Begin Monday Schedule Released

Action deferred on Alpine gas plan for three towns

City Council Tuesday postponed a decision on forming a non profit corporation to run a natural gas system serving Alpine Marfa and Fort Davis due to the absence of Councilman T A Beard. W A Pendleton of Dallas proposes a regional non profit entity to bring gas from the Hershey field northeast of Alpine with each town appointing two directors.

Safeway expands Alpine store with new building

Safeway awarded a 75 by 110 foot addition in Alpine to Midwest Lumber Co. for about 75 000 with 25 000 to 75 000 for fixtures. The project adds 100 feet of frozen food cases, a self service meat department, refrigerated air conditioning, and extra parking on 3rd Street. Completion expected in September.

Phosphate Development in Brewster County Studied

The Alpine Chamber of Commerce has known for months about phosphate discoveries in lower Brewster County. Efforts to confirm commercial ore, led by several chamber committees, are under way. P Leonetti of Houston plans to visit Alpine to discuss possible plans for a Brewster County mine west of Big Bend National Park and north of Lajitas.

Hunting Season Hearings Called

Public hearings to gather information on proposed hunting fishing and trapping regulations in Brewster and Jeff Davis counties are scheduled for next month. The first meeting is 8 p m Tuesday June 4 at the Brewster County Courthouse Alpine. The second is 10 a m Wednesday June 5 at the Jeff Davis County Courthouse Fort Davis. All interested urged to attend.

Summer School Registration Opens at High School Hall

Registration for the elementary summer enrichment program will be held at 9 a.m. Monday June 3 in the high school study hall. Classes offered include 3 4 5 math, 6 7 8 science, spelling plain writing, and 6 7 8 grade English and 6 7 8 math.

Sul Ross State College Announces Summer Term Schedule

An anticipated large enrollment for Sul Ross State College will begin the summer term on Monday June 3 with staggered registration by alphabetical groups. Classes start June 4 and run to July 12 for the first semester, with a second term from July 15 to August 23. Activities include workshops in multiple fields, the 15th Annual Reading Conference July 28 to August 1, and a Band Camp August 26 to 31, plus extracurriculars such as square dancing and trips around Alpine and the Big Bend. Regular recreational facilities are available.
