Legislature Sets Aside College Fund for Year Round Swimming

The House approved a Sul Ross College appropriation increasing a pool enhancement by 50 000 to allow year round swimming for students. Rep Gene Hendryx led the push, saying Alpine weather limits use of an 80 000 pool. Total state spending in the bill totals about 1.2 million for the next two fiscal years with funds from general revenue and tuition.

Van Cleef to Study at University of Wyoming

Dean of Men Ray C. Van Cleef receives a leave of absence for the 1963 64 school year to pursue a Doctorate at the University of Wyoming. Joe E Spencer Sul Ross faculty member becomes acting dean of men in his stead. Jack Perryman Mary Lou Davenport and La Marylis Oliver assist with campus social activities.

Dyke to Go to Pakistan Harlan Ford to Be Dean

Dr. Delbert A. Dyke dean of the college at Sul Ross State College gets a leave to head Oklahoma State University Pakistan Technical Education Program a Ford Foundation project. L. Harlan Ford will become dean on July 1 and Dr. Dyke travels mid June with family for a Pakistan tour of duty involving visits to Philadelphia New York Washington and Karachi previously on duty 1959 to 1961.

County Hikes Land Values in Brewster for 1964

Brewster County commissioners vote to raise land values effective January 1 1964 due to higher material and labor costs since 1951. Zone rates jump to 1.10 2 3 4 5 dollars per acre with current levels listed. Livestock valuations set as well. Court to meet June 10 as board of equalization to review 1963 renditions. Fos. Jack heads to Irving to attend Dallas Civic Chorus concert with granddaughter.

Midland Chamber hear tourism talk by Casner and park official

Casner Joseph president of Casner Motor Co. Alpine and Stanley Joseph Big Bend National Park superintendent attended a Midland Chamber of Commerce meeting of tourism and retail sales committees Tuesday. Casner and L M McAdoo Seagraves Texas Quality Automobile Dealers of the Year were honored by Cecil Elder. Joseph gave an illustrated talk on Big Bend Park Alpine and this area. Edward Lee Wittner of Lamesa visited his mother here this week.

Baccalaureate and Merit Awards Slated at Alpine High

Alpine High School announces a Sunday baccalaureate at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium with speakers from local churches and a later acknowledgment ceremony on May 29. Graduates listed include Beatrice Adamson, Baeza, Chavez, Hutchinson, Cleveland, and many more. An eight week English course for Latin American children starts June 3 at Centennial School with enrollment at 8:30 a.m.

Alpine School Board Names Burleson and Lewis to Faculty

J Burleson former Sul Ross Lobos star halfback was named assistant football coach under new head coach Joe Boyd at Alpine. Carol T Lewis daughter of Mrs Neil Gardner of Alpine was assigned to Central School teaching 6th 7th and 8th grade English. Burleson a Dell City High School 1959 graduate set a national 6 man scoring record and earned All Texas College honors in 1962. He and wife Charlene Watson Burleson have one son Jerry Kent.

Ethel Rogers Buried Here

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Black Rogers 81 were held at St. James Episcopal Church with Rev. William A Anthony officiating. She died Tuesday morning at home and is survived by two sons Paul Rogers Corpus Christi and Carl P Rogers Jr Olympia Wash. Burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.

G Schaefer Promoted to Wire Chief in Midland District

Bruce Beard of Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Lubbock is named wire chief in Midland, replacing Gene Schaefer who becomes plant foreman in Big Spring. The 13 year veteran began as a lineman in Lubbock and has held several posts. Schaefer moved to Alpine in 1962 from Shamrock where he led as wire chief.

Alpine Woman's Father Buried

Ben D. Wagnon, 80, father of Mrs. Cecil Hale of Alpine, died Friday in San Angelo. A longtime locomotive engineer, he retired from the Santa Fe in 1948 after 37 years in rail service. Funeral services were held in San Angelo Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. Hale and son Richard attending. He was born November 19, 1882, in Palestine and moved to San Angelo in 1911.
