Diplomas Awarded to Alpine High Seniors in Commencement

Fifteen Alpine High School seniors received diplomas at Friday night exercises. Rev. Angie Smith of Trinity Methodist El Paso delivered the keynote on "Vision." Valedictorian Bessie Chyle Leath and salutatorian Roy May led the honors, with multiple awards including scholarships, Lincoln medal, life insurance, and perfect attendance certificates.

Avalanche Building To Be Moved This Week

The Avalanche will publish early this week and be one to three days late next week due to moving the building about 50 feet onto a newly purchased Alpine Publishing Company lot. Work will clear interiors and a modern filling station will be built on the site after the move. The move requires disassembly and reassembly of machinery and space remains limited until completion.

Tree Budding Sparks High Interest in Highland Area

County Agent R. B. Miller reports strong interest in tree budding among Highland residents. He assisted in budding two trees on several ranches and recently completed budding about 15 pecan trees on the Kokernot ranch north of Alpine. He also topped large trees and noted some pecan trees there are over 49 years old and in good condition for future nut production. Miller cites Texas Prolific and Burkett as well suited varieties for the region.

Davis Mountain Federation Women Club Session Report

The Davis Mountain Federation Women’s clubs meet today with delegates from Fort Davis Fort Stockton Valent rathon Alpine and other towns. A play by Mrs Fannie Potter and a style show by Alpine’s Bigresso club are featured as delegates attend a luncheon at the Holland hotel. A federation report will appear in the Valleanche next week.

Prominent Educator Visits Alpine For Sul Ross and Simmons

Dr J D Sandefer president of Simmons University Abilene praised Alpine leaders and Sul Ross College faculty. He noted the school’s growth from obscurity to a 1300 student university with 10 new buildings and growth that outpaced capacity. He spoke to Baptist and Methodist congregations and addressed Sul Ross students at chapel.

Sul Ross Baccalaureate Service Scheduled at College Auditorium

Buren Sparks, Baptist pastor, will deliver the baccalaureate at Sul Ross State Teachers College next Sunday at 11 a.m. in the college auditorium. Rev I F Davis will assist. The president’s reception occurs May 28 evening at 7:30 at the president’s home. Diplomas and certificates will be awarded to graduates listed in the program.

Memorial Day Services Arrangements Announced

Arrangements for Memorial Day services next Monday morning are set. Mrs Charles Livingston leads the flower gathering and asks volunteers to have blooms ready by Sunday morning. Flowers will be collected at the courthouse square before the wreaths are laid at the cemetery. An unveiling ceremony honors R C Armistead and Ivan Moss, World War I veterans.

Noah Beery to Visit Davis Mountain Resort

Noah Beery the famous actor plans a July visit to Rancho Valle in Cienega Alpine for a Big Bend project. Local sponsor Ps Crawford reports 62 reservations already and more daily as the remodeled main building adds three wings around a patio. Beery may shoot a western in the Big Bend if schedules permit.

Plans for Hotel Addition Near Complete

Plans for enlarging the Holland hotel near Alpine proceed as Mr. Holland and architects confer. The addition will add about 36 to 70 guest rooms and remodeling will occur on the upper floor to handle more patrons turned away daily.

County Agent Urges Fight on the Blowfly

County agent Miller urges ranchers in three counties to use fly traps against blowflies to curb screw worm infestation. He cites Sutton County results where about 900 traps reduced cases and saved cattle, noting traps plus carcass burning as effective. Organizers named include Bennett Willis McCutcheon Reid Gillett and J B Gillett.
