A telegram from R B Slight in El Paso confirms the death of Ralph Slight after a horseback accident near his father's New Mexico ranch. Ralph was thrown against a fence while riding to school and died at El Paso's Masonic Hospital after surgery. Burial planned in Al ine with family arrival awaited.
The Sul Ross Lobo football squad, led by Coach B C Graves, aims for a third Southwestern Conference title in 1927 after back to back championships. The team, anchored by Captain Younger at center, plans to regroup with returning veterans and new players, facing a slate including New Mexico A and M and Howard Payne with a hopeful outlook for the season.
Fifteen Alpine High School seniors will receive diplomas at tonight's commencement with Rev. Angie Smith of El Paso delivering the address. The program includes diplomas awarded by Mr. F F Gillett and honors conferred by Supt. Melton, with diplomas and awards to follow a baccalaureate service held Sunday morning.
Dr. J D Sandefer president of Simmons University Abilene will speak at the Baptist church on May 22 in the morning and evening sessions. The event is sponsored by the Baptist church Business Men s Bible Class which is promoting the attendance to hear a noted Baptist speaker. Sul Ross students are especially invited to attend both services.
The South Pacific shifted the seventh and last Big Mike engine to Orient tracks to handle booming freight. Louie Starns says Orient and B of Hees offices are strained by high interchange activity and a fourth interchange clerk was authorized to provide 24 hour service.

Richard Dix and Betty Bronson star in Paradise for Two to be shown at the Mojave Theatre next Monday and Tuesday for the Young People’s Department of the Methodist church. The department seeks about 125 to complete a piano purchase and appeals for liberal patronage.
Alpine Chamber of Commerce president urges representatives from Valentine Sierras Planes Marfa Van Horn Fort Bliss and Sanderson to travel to Maine next Monday to form a permanent body addressing border highway issues and tourist traffic concerns. A possible shift to a military highway status and federal maintenance is discussed by Major General Ernest Hinds.
John Perkins is named a director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce for the coming year. He attends a Wichita Falls convention as a representative of the Alpine business community and is expected home today after a meeting in Alpine.
Attendance at Rotary meetings declined over the past two weeks with twelve members absent last week and ten absent yesterday. Lupe Melton, newly elected president, presided yesterday and cited school duties during commencement week but promised activity would resume next week. Other officers and directors named include Herbert Kokernot Jr as vice president Johnny Gentry as secretary treasurer and Hopson and T R Moody as directors.
Mrs Payne entertained children and fairies in a small Monday night play on Mrs Garrett’s lawn Wednesday afternoon. Games were played and youngsters joined in light fun with imaginative roles and simple costumes.
The Alpine chamber of commerce held a special meeting to honor Mrs Fields, president of the Federation of Texas Women, with a speech by her and guests from El Paso. Rev Millican gave the invocation and local clubs welcomed the federation head. A single business item on Presidio land purchase for the Orient right of way was postponed indefinitely due to luncheon timing.
J.M. Pouncey district deputy home warden and D. A Barker assistant came back early this week from Pecos River posts where they checked dynamiting reports for fish. Thomas Funk, a young Alpine man, aided a Fabens caller then drove toward Alpine with a hitchhiker. Near Marfa the companion struck Funk with a monkey wrench during tire repair, leaving Funk battered but pursuing the car until it fled. Funk was injured but not seriously. Edwards confessed to highway robbery and auto theft, claiming no further involvement.
The United States Department of Agriculture with Texas A and M Extension plans an exhaustive survey of Trans Pecos soils. The team, led by M. W., will base at Alpine for about three months and study irrigation potential for fruit and grape crops. Members include W. T. Carter of Washington D C T. Reiteh of Victoria Texas and M. W. I Washington College Station.
Mrs R A McMurry hosted her forty two club Thursday afternoon with Mesdames Middlebrook Ca Arch Allen Haynes L ell W H L Terry Deel ins Thrift Anja Wilson Wintyre Clay Holland Ferguson Joe Hord Wood in attendance. Homer Ferguson won high score and a delightful recourse was served to guests.
The Texas Folk-Lore Society elected Sal Ross faculty member Mr. Boatright as vice-president during the annual session in Austin. Mr. Crimmins of Fort Sam Houston was chosen president and Mise Javita Gonzales of St. Mary's Hall, San Antonio, delivered the con el program on the Texas Mexican vaquero with her deep border ranch experience.
Messrs A H Vaught M I Dye M Griffin and F W Lewis visited from El Paso and Dallas Colonial Building and Loan of Dallas plans to place a local agent in Alpine. They sold several contracts and anticipate a full time representative to cover the area as more Alpine growth encourages home building and rental housing.
City board of equalization met Monday at city hall to hear protests against higher valuations. Members included W. W. Jenkins W. B. Hamilton and Otis Tur ee. About Rs15 000 in new valuations will raise revenue by about 500 dollars, with Fs200 more from new building last year.
