Alpine area to welcome Cathedral Mountain Lodge a new dude ranch planned 18 miles south of Alpine on the Brown Ranch site. Mr and Mrs Charles DeBarbrie have rehabilitated buildings and expect to open next week with the resort in Brew cer County.
A compiled letter and snippets discuss Alpine Texas, Rotary in Little Rock Arkansas, and reminiscences of Alpine people. References include Fort Davis and the Davis Mountains, Barry Scobee’s Texas Parade article, and campfire memories of bandits in 1919 near Alpine. A Pappy speech on U S Highway 80 is noted along with Abilene Reporter-News vacation writeups.
The Marfa Alpine Battery A of the 537th AAA Bn (AW) (SP) will depart Marfa and Alpine for North Fort Hood at 6 am Sunday in two commercial classes. The 90 man unit is part of the 90th Division Artillery under Brig Gen Zar Rudder, with Lt Col Ben T. Baird Jr commanding the El Paso based battalion. Battery A is led by 1st Lt Lawrence D. Vann with Maj Bedford P. Cain of Alpine as battalion executive officer. The group includes reserve personnel totaling 212. Continued on page 8.
Mrs Jona Epperson presented the law library of her late husband to Brewster County this week. Judge Epperson died in June 1954 in Alice Texas while serving as judge of the 83rd Judicial District. The 991 volume collection is now stored in the district judge’s office at the Brewster County Courthouse. County Judge Felix Shuagnury accepted the gift, praising Mrs Epperson and her children for the valuable addition to the county’s law library.
City official Ashley Classen was hired to draft plans for a Sunny Glen pipeline to import water from Alpine. Tests on the Riess well showed no immediate project plans. Dowell Oil and Gas reported no fluid movement in the well bore. City officials focus on the Sunny Glen water field as mayor calls for clear, factual thinking amid potential emergency.
Reginald Wotan, Alpine Board of Trustees vice president, presents 34 Alpine High School diplomas in a modest graduation. Seniors perform music, with John Hayslip delivering invocation and Lazaro Valenzuela giving benediction. Salutatory and valedictory by Gladys Cowell and Meriell McCollum. Multiple awards noted including FFA honors for Eddie Fowlkes and Richard Phillips, plus DAR Good Citizenship to Judy Crider and Ross Scholarship to Kay Young.
Alpine Cowboys mark their 10th year under Herbert Kokernot Jr. with a 3 pm season opener on Sunday June 3 at Kokernot Field. The world champion Wichita Boeing Bombers visit June 10 for a weekend series as veteran Convoy players return and new talent from Southwest Conference colleges join the roster. Max Parkin headlines an opening day entertainment lineup, while manager Tomi Chandler and assistant Chuck Ellis oversee a roster featuring Herb Biederman Roy Lewis and college stars from Sul Ross St Marys Baylor SMU and Milwaukee property.
Funeral services for Charles Leonard Thomas, longtime Big Bend ranchman, were held at the First Methodist Church in Alpine with Rev. Carl Lawson officiating. Burial followed at Jim Grove Cemetery. He died May 24 in Shannon Memorial Hospital San Angelo from a coronary occlusion with double pneumonia after six days of illness at the O W Cardwell Ranch near Junction. Born August 26 1890 in Graydon County, he arrived in Presidio County in 1909 and later operated the family ranch near Marfa before moving to Alpine in 1946. He married Miss Stather Elliott in 1946 and was active in the Alpine Community Center and First Methodist Church. Survived by his widow two brothers two sisters and several nephews and nieces. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers from Alpine Marfa and Junction officiated. Out of town attendees included relatives from Hondo Nixon Hereford Dallas and Washington DC among others.
Vacation Bible School opens Sunday for children aged four through eleven. Sessions run daily weekday mornings from 9 to 11 30 with a closing program and evening worship on Sunday, June 10, highlighting the children’s achievements.
Alpine Garment Factory Inc, chartered as a $50,000 corporation, aims to operate a clothing factory employing at least 50 people in Alpine within weeks. They seek $30,000 initial capitalization with $10 shares, having already raised over $22,000. Officers include Jim Casner president and Paul Forchheimer VP. plans call for a chosen factory site and formal stockholder list next week.
TV technician Mr. Nell survived after contact between an antenna and a 13,000-volt REA line at Pete Kennedy ranch 10 miles northwest of Al Pine. Mrs. Kennedy and daughter Jacqueline steadied the wire setup, but all escaped injury. Nell was revived with artificial respiration and treated at Lockhart Clinic. power authorities warn antennae near lines are hazardous, worsened by gusty winds.
Alpine riot club to stage a two night musical comedy on July 5 and 6 featuring local talent. Casting details to be announced mid June. A baby contest for children up to five years old will accompany the event as a community celebration.
