Hon R E Thomason will deliver the principal address at the West Texas chamber of commerce convention in Mineral Wells. Jack Lamb reports the Big Bend area as the last frontier of America after filming there for a proposed documentary to be shown in major Texan cities. The film, shot with wildlife footage and landscape views, will be shown about 20 times monthly across North America, reaching about 10 000 viewers each month. Local Showers Hit Big Bend Area This Week
Good local rains and showers have fallen in many parts of the Big Bend and Davis mountains area the past week. A substantial rainfall was reported in Hovey Leoneita country, with about half an inch south of Marathon. Alpine saw light showers two or three days this week bringing total precipitation to around 1.2 inches. Mid summer weather has prevailed with cloudy skies hinting at more moisture.

Rotary Kids Week Observed At Alpine Airport Contests
A windy day kept airplane makers away as only two planes entered the Rotary event at Alpine Airport. Ralph Fabian and Bobby Pope took top honors with a flying instructor granting each winner a flight in the neighboring country. In non flying models Fabian Weston and Holland led, while four entries entered the kite contest and Billy Weston won the largest box kite. Candy contest saw 15 girls and seven boys submit samples with Leila Petit winning for white fudge. A separate item notes a divorce case involving a Camden, New Jersey, resident mentioned in passing.

Valedictorian Drilling To Start On New Oil Test
Margaret Wade, valedictorian of the Al Hoehah school Velar class, has a high average and will graduate May 39. A new oil test is to be drilled at the Decie ranch four miles northwest of Marathon, announced by Chester Dewey. A rotary rig will be used and the steel derrick is being erected. Humble Oil holds about 80,000 acres leased in the area.

Dr H E Elkins president of San Angelo Junior College was chosen as the commencement speaker by the senior class. Rev Fred S Rogers pastor of First Presbyterian Church was elected to give the baccalaureate sermon on Sunday May 25 at 11 am in the college auditorium. NYA Projects Continue in Alpine and Sul Ross College
Charles Thompson of El Paso is due in Alpine early next week to continue NYA work for city schools and Sul Ross college. Enrollment of NYA boys at the Girls Cooperative home near campus is planned for Monday May 19. Young men 17 to 24 seeking work with the youth administration should report then or contact Mrs. Howard Hamilton at the courthouse. Projects include an activity room at the Co‑op home and a small vocational agriculture building at Alpine High.

Work On New Sidewalks Progress In City
Work is under way on a new sidewalk on the west side of the Mord building on Sixth street from the alley south to Aldlland avenue, with completion expected by week’s end as contractor Ick Davis reports. Davis also adds a new walk from the Big Bend Service station to Exell laundry and plans to rebuild the Holland buildings sidewalk on Holland avenue. The Fifth and Sixth street S. P. railroad crossings will be paved soon, cost shared by the city and railroad, and the crossing near the S. P. pump station has been leveled and reopened.
