The Texas Rockies event drew Alpine and nearby towns Fort Davis Marathon Pecos Marfa with bands and a standout parade float. Residents praise the neighborly spirit, note some carnival and railroad noise, and urge improvements for next year while commending sponsors and local business leaders.
The Alpine Cowboys announced a Sunday game at Koernot field for 3 p. m. against the San Angelo Greyhounds. Manager Ray McNeill said every squad member would get a chance to play as they aim to "clean out the dugout." The Greyhounds are described as one of the strongest independent teams in the San Angelo area.
More than 100 property owners appeared before the city board of equalization on consecutive days to challenge valuation increases. The board largely left values unchanged, with few exceptions, and scheduled an additional morning session to hear remaining applicants.
F. S. Breshears of Houston visited his family here last weekend, stopping briefly to catch up with relatives and share news of his work.

May 29 marks American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day. Citizens are urged to honor the war dead and support veterans, with poppies sold to fund hospital care and veteran services. Wear a poppy to show remembrance and service.
Sixty five Rossonians will receive degrees at Sul Ross College on May 24 with nine MA, ten BA, twelve BBA and thirty four BSc degrees. Dr Henry Stilwell will address graduates on May 24 at 10 am. Alpine High School plans 38 seniors to graduate May 28 with valedictorian Shirley Blevins and salutatorian Jo Nell Pope.
Sul Ross College plans a busy summer term starting June 1 as enrollment rises. The program features a Big Bend Band clinic, Art Colony, and an Education Administration and Supervision workshop with Counseling. Seven visiting professors will teach across terms, including John E. Paris and Dr. Brace.
City water users are urged to limit use to essential needs until rain relieves drought. Wells can supply ample water but pumps cannot meet demand even when run continuously. If the fire siren sounds, turn off all sprinklers immediately. Rain is hoped to relieve the situation soon.
Smith Furniture Co has moved to a temporary location one block west of its former quarters in the Fuller building and one block north of Casader Motor Co on N Seventh Street. Mr Smith plans future construction on a site bought recently from M L Hopson just east of the post office.
Reginald and Frank Wotan of Brewster County Motors depart for Denver to board a special train carrying Ford dealers to a meeting in San Francisco.
Wally Davis the Granada theatre manager announced a Saturday cartoon circus and the feature Tarzan and the Leopard Woman. Doors open at 9 30 am for Alpine Marathon and Fort Davis kiddies and parents with admission 25c children 35c adults and a free popcorn bag for all.
Paul E. Stafford of New Orleans treated for injuries from a Sunday night auto accident west of Alpine. Nancy McGonagill of Marathon and Rita Vasquez of Marfa received medical updates with Rita undergoing major surgery on May 18.

The Alpine High School homemaking department starts a year round program on Wednesday June 2 with morning classes for school age girls and evening classes for adults. Courses are free and aim to aid out of school youth and adults. A sewing class will open for adults with other courses based on demand. Enroll through Mrs Mauryne Donaubauer at the high school.
Alpine city officials urge a broad clean-up of premises to combat polio with focus on removing trash piles and mosquito breeding sites. Plans include DDT spraying on garbage trucks and livestock premises urged to spray and dump droppings in lime pits daily. Dogs and cats should be kept confined and rabies vaccinated as further precautions are prepared.
Marfa High won the championship at Ko bernot Field in the first Interscholastic league baseball tournament. Alpine High, paced by pitcher Robert Hernandez, led early but a late ninth inning rally by Marfa produced three runs to clinch the title. Alpine finished second and Pyote third after round play that saw Marfa beat Fort Davis and Alpine defeat Pyote.
The second annual chamber of commerce rodeo ended Sunday in Alpine with an acclaimed parade at 5 p.m. Friday featuring pioneer themed floats, mounted riders, and four bands from Fort Davis Marfa Alpine and Sul Ross. Marathon Service and Women's Civic clubs won best float. Joe McLean Bet y Meador Don Burleson Kathleen Fowlkes earned top honors among performers. Despite a pre parade shower and sporadic rain, rodeo crowds were strong especially Saturday night, with top talent from the Southwest and national names highlighted by producers Raymond Quigg Chili Cole and Jerry Starnes. Final rodeo winners included Dude Smith Burl Joseph Bib Morris Roy Calloway Rex Richards Tom Powers Lefty Wilkins Andy Bode Ed Phillips Lee Roberts Baker McGilvray Sixie Jo McGill and Sy sy Allen Jean Espy.
A city golf tournament will begin on June 1 with nine hole matches and an open invitation. An entry fee of 2.50 dollars applies and all qualifying scores must be in by June 1. The event promises valuable prizes and an af fair launching summer activities at the local course.
W. D. Pedigo, veteran campaigner for the Salvation Army, will make his annual visit to Brewster county soon. This is the only official fund raising campaign the Army will conduct this year and residents are urged to contribute generously. Local committee members are G. W. Baines, D. C. Littleton and D. M. Bennett.
Mrs Anna Katherine Winkler wife of Fort Stockton merchant Ben Winkler died in a Houston hospital Sunday night Burial was in Dallas Tuesday afternoon She was a native of New York and had resided in Fort Stockton since 1912 Mr and Mrs Louis Forchheimer were called to Dallas earlier this week by her death.
