A 5000 foot wildcat drill is announced by Mid-American Minerals Company to start this week on the Meri wether Ranch about five miles northwest of Alpine. The test will use sable tools in Section 43, Block 3, Pecos County Hunt No 35 Alsmore near Hovey with circulation at 699 feet as the operator proceeds.

Alpine Centennial School will hold graduation events Monday May 23 in the high school auditorium. The Sul Ross State Lobos baseball team closed 1980 with a split at Kokernot Field against Sam Houston State. They won game one 63 and lost game two 97, aiming to stay in the Southwest District NAIA tournament race in Sioux City, Iowa, early June. The Lobos posted strong stats with several players over .300, led by Tommy Shields, Don Phillips, Bobby Becker, and Daryle Gibbons. Pitcher Shields posted seven wins with a 2.28 ERA in 63 innings.
