A photograph from last Friday afternoon shows a snowball with hailstones after a heavy rain and hailstorm. The Otis Kimball Ranch northeast of Alpine reported 35 inches of rain and Brewster County saw exceedingly heavy downpours. further details appear in the Ranch News column on Page 3A.

Alpine's Cowboys sustained an 8 game winning streak to lead the Sophomore League's south division last week aided by two new infielders. Shortstop Jim Knorr and second baseman Charles Venilling form a strong keystone. Pitchers Jugo Papstein and Tony Baker bolster the staff. Catcher Tom Roberts delayed by Raleigh duties but is due to report soon. Knorr sidelined briefly by a soft tissue bruise. Regulars Nosone and Grilli reassigned to Corning. Total attendance for 12 games reached 5968. The club faces Artesia in a Monday series at Ko rnob River field, before two road trips to Carlsbad and Midland.
Progress on a Mexican national park across the Rio Grande from Big Bend was reported at the May 1916 International Good Neighbor Council assembly in Tampico. W. J. Newell, Big Bend Development chair, said talks with Mexican officials showed sincere interest, with plans to have a park under Mexican supervision and to complement U S parks. Attendees from West Texas included Newell, George and Hank Miller, Molly Lowther, Maria C of C, Conrad Donegan, Rep. Richard Slack, and local officials.
Rev and Mrs C W Newbill and children were called to San Antonio by the death of Mrs Newhill's father W M Seward 68 a veteran railroad conductor for Southern Pacific who died after a brief illness Burial was in Del Rio where the Sewards lived for many years Mr Newbill returned home last weekend while Mrs Newbill and Adren stay in San Antonio with her mother for two weeks.
Eight NAIA teams will be invited to the third NAIA National Baseball Championship in Alpine on June 25 at Kokernot Field. A double elimination format guarantees at least two games per team, with trophies donated by local sponsors and season tickets on sale for eight sessions priced at five dollars.
Mayor W. E. Lockhart urges a permanent water and sewer board for Alpine to safeguard future supply. The Avalanche editorial prompted the push, with Grady Nelon Jimmy Pate and Commissioner Glenn Burgess seeking more data and legal guidance from the League of Texas Municipalities.
New telephone building housing park equipment will be dedicated Monday May 25 in Big Bend National Park. Fred Kester Midland district manager of Southwestern Bell announces an informal barbecue luncheon at Government Springs House at noon followed by dedication at park headquarters.
Lobos Brooke to host a three game series with Brooke Army Medical of San Antonio Friday and Saturday marking the regular season finale. The Lobos, 15-49, aim for wins to boost NAIA tournament hopes while star players including George Martin Jim Dodson Freddy Davis and Wisp Hensley prepare for the last series. Warren McCarson heals a knee injury and may miss the set while pitching duties go to Cox Hudson Dickson and Shields with Hudson Shields earning recent wins.
Will Wilson, Texas attorney general in his second term, will be principal speaker at the 39th annual spring convocation of Sul Ross State College at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 24, in the Main Auditorium. There are 107 degree candidates. six will receive master degrees and 101 bachelor degrees in various fields.
Rev Robert K Baird becomes pastor of First Methodist Church in Alpine after nine years at Epworth Church in Carlsbad New Mexico He is in his early 30s a Perkins School of Theology graduate and arrives with his wife and 16 month old child Also Dr B H Warnock underwent surgery at Brewster Memorial Hospital earlier this week.
The mail route from Pecos to Marfa via Alpine is now open for bids. The Post Office Department invites bids to carry the mail on this route. Interested parties can obtain necessary information from Postmaster Billy B. West.
Sul Ross State College wins the San Angelo rodeo team title and top honors at the Oregon finals. Jim Bausch earns All-Around Cowboy. Elizabeth Fitzgerald takes All-Around Cowgirl and high girl. SR to compete in the National Finals at Klamath Falls.
Seniors at Alpine High School will receive diplomas Wednesday night May 27. Linda Kay will deliver the vale dictory and Sandra Thomas the salutatory. J C Coleman will present 52 diplomas, with one possible summer graduate. The seniors plan a trip to Eagle Pass and Mexico City returning in June.
Clifton native Bones Worthington aged 70 died May 4 in a Venezuela truck accident. He was transported to a hospital three hours after the crash, later reported by Freoley McSpadden of Barcelona. Survived by two nephews Jim and Phillip and a niece Marian, with parents named Mr. and Mrs. JM Worthington. Born November 3, 1888 in Loveland Texas, he wandered from Alpine to Glass Mountain and Agua Fria before a long stint in Venezuela with Gulf Oil and U.S. Government service during wartime.
