A lively opening at the JC field produced a 15 to 15 tie between ranchmen and business men as locals swung at balls amid chatter and laughter. Sunday promises a Pilot club benefit game at Kokernot field, with Junior Cowboys versus Alpine Internationals drawing a big crowd, all part of a busy local sports week.
The Alpine PTA held its last meeting of the 1949-50 year in the high school auditorium on May 15. Outgoing president Mrs. C. F. Cox announced membership rose to 120 and the carnival netted over 1100 dollars. Incoming officers were installed: Mrs. M. V. Hill president, Mrs. Billy Ward first vice president, Mrs. Everett Turner second vice president, Mrs. Elton Miles treasurer, and Mrs. N. B. Armstrong secretary.
Petra Valenzuela of Alpine High School earns salutatorian honors with a 94.88 average from 34 grades after time in Terlingua and Alpine Public Schools. Ronald Klein is valedictorian with a 95.11 average, attends Alpine High three years, and has district and state competition wins and Boy’s State participation.
Brewster county sets its bond quota at 28000 for Series E U S Savings Bonds as part of the Independence drive. Frank N Newsom reports the May 15 through July 4 timeline, with Texas state quota at 24088000, and ceremonies in Independence Hall to mark the national kick off with Presidents Truman and Snyder. A Fort Worth event follows May 16 unveiling a Liberty Bell replica. The bell tour covers 120 towns in 87 counties over 5000 miles. Local visits by Lt Delvin Glenn and Walter Bradshaw included in Austin and Galveston locales.
Bruce B. Duncan well known county ranchman died suddenly yesterday morning of a heart attack. He was returning from a cougar hunt in a pickup with Edwin McCollum foreman of the Vic Pierce ranch when he slumped over the wheel. McCollum and a ranch hand rushed him to the ranch house where a physician was summoned but Duncan died instantly. He is survived by his widow and a daughter Mrs. Paul Schrimsher Connie of El Paso.
City officials report water production up about 100 percent since last year but demand still exceeds supply. All wells now have meters. a 13 day average output was 952.66 gallons daily. Officials urge careful use of water, avoid waste, and expect drought measures may be avoided with showers and cooperation.
A benefit baseball game is set for Sunday at Kokernot field in Alpine at 3 p.m. between the Alpine Junior Cowboys and the Alpine Internationals. The Pilot Club sponsors the event with proceeds to child welfare, and several players from last year’s Junior squad will participate along with returning members.
Alpine High School officials announced the 1950 commencement exercises will be Sunday May 21 at 3 30 p m. The 41 member graduating class includes two summer graduates who will receive diplomas after completing correspondence work. The event will feature processional invocation announcements and a music program with Reverend Austin H Dillon delivering the address.
The Paisano encampment’s new Crawford Mitchell tabernacle was formally accepted by the building committee and directors. Naming honors go to Mr Mitchell for his service as grounds superintendent and encampment president. The modern structure seats about 2000 with cushion seats and arm rests and will be ready for the 1950 session August 7 to 13.
Dr Dollahue veterinarian will be at the city office on June 2 from 10 a m to 5 p m for vaccinating dogs. All dog owners urged to bring their animals to receive rabies inoculation certificate and tag showing compliance.
The First National Bank in Alpine completed negotiations with Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Wells for a 50 ft lot at the corner of North Fifth Street and Avenue E, announced at press time yesterday.
Alpine residents are reminded clean-up week is underway with city and county trucks to begin rounds next Monday to collect trash and haul it to the city dump. Place refuse in accessible containers. branches must be under eight feet and no dirt moved. Public spraying continues through summer. cooperation may prevent an epidemic.
State Highway department will let a contract next month for the final 20 miles of Highway 118 from Alpine to near Adobe Walls, extending paving toward the park boundary. Geo J Kempen Jr reports progress on the 40 mile alignment with 20 miles completed and 10 miles due for topping this summer.
Sul Ross College will hold its thirtieth spring commencement on May 21 and 22 awarding 144 Rossonian degrees. The largest graduating class ever includes 14 MA, 14 BA, 23 BBA, 1 BM, 79 BS, and 14 BS in Range Animal Husbandry. A new Bachelor of Music degree debuts.
Alpine adopts Ordinance No. 276 in a unanimous April session to curb itinerant peddlers by requiring licenses from the city secretary and bonding for those taking down payments. The measure, patterned after Mineral Wells, mandates license display while soliciting and sets a $1,000 bond with a Texas surety. Continues on page 8.
