Alpine Soldier Recounts Pacific War Hardships on Furlough

Herbert Dalton, after 23 months in the South Pacific, returned home for a brief visit before hospital convalescence. He earned three campaign stars and a President’s citation, shared jungle hardships, improvised with a helmet, and described swimming for safety near Leyte with three friends. He praised Filipino kindness and recalled memories from Alpine Texas.

Dads Honored At Annual FFA Barbecue

The local FFA chapter hosted its annual barbecue last Thursday night at Kokernot Lodge with about 125 attendees. John Dow Harris, president, led the program presented by members to honor dads and other guests.

Funeral Services Held Here Last Saturday For Mrs Nannie Woodward

Funeral services for Mrs. Nannie Woodward 70, Alpine pioneer, were held at the Baptist church. She died after a long illness in a San Antonio hospital. Survivors include two sons, two sisters, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Interment was at Elm Grove cemetery with pallbearers named.

Alpine soldier freed from German prison camp

Pfc. Fred M. Cadena of Alpine has been released from a German prison camp and will be returned to the United States. His father was notified by telegram from the adjutant general. Cadena was captured during the German counteroffensive in the Aachen area last December and had been overseas since September 1943.

Alpine Lodge Marks 50th Birthday and Debt Liquidation

Alpine Masons celebrated the lodge fiftieth anniversary and the final liquidation of all indebtedness at a Saturday night meeting. The lodge began January 24, 1895, under J. M. Crutchfield, with early officers including J. W. Kokernot and Dan Carr. By 1911 the lodge had 86 members and planned a lodge home. cornerstone laid February 3, 1912 by Capt. J. B. Gillete. The last note was paid after 38 years, the deed burned at the ceremony. Present trustees J. W. Prazer, Guy Crawford, Carl Shults, and 132 members were praised, with a barbecue at Kokernot park attended by about 75 Masons. Dr. L. C. Pope hosted the lodge meeting and A. J. Joyce serves as worshipful master.

Alpine High School to Hold Sunday Service and Graduation Events

Alpine high school announces Sunday afternoon services at 5 o'clock in the Hide Scheal Sutton chapel with Rev. Francis Juaniz delivering the sermon. Graduation exercises follow next Friday at 8 p.m. with 27 diploma candidates. class valedictorian Harriet Walker and salutatorian Wallace Duncan named. A primary program at Central School and kindergarten, plus 8th grade graduation Thursday at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium, with Dean T. H. Etheridge of Sul Ross College as speaker.

Arrangements Completed For Boy Scout Summer Camp

Plans are set for a six day Scout summer camp for all Big Bend registered Scouts from June 13 to July 1 at Mitre Peak Guest Ranch ten miles northwest of Alpine. Reservations are mailed, tents arranged with El Paso Council, meals served at the guest house mess hall, and a full daily program includes cooking sanitation set up pioneering engineering exploring water safety first aid and games like ping pong and horseshoes.

Gen Cousins Hails Big Bend Residents for War Effort

General Ralph P. Cousins lauded Alpine and nearby communities for cooperation aiding Marfa Army Air Field. Since Dec 5 1942 the field produced over 7 000 pilots including Chinese and air transport crews. He noted graduates aided Germany's defeat and credited all military and civilian personnel for excellent training.

Mexican Confesses Jeff Davis Murder

Ramon Carrillo, a ranch hand suspected in the May 5 murder of Esteban Olivas at the Willis W. McCutcheon Seven Springs ranch, was arrested in Pecos and brought to Fort Davis. He signed a written confession admitting the crime. He is held for the July term of district court on a $5,000 bond. Olivas, 25, married with a wife and two children in Santa Rosalia, Mexico.

Brewster County E Bond Quota For 7th War Loan Stalls

The 7th War Loan opened this week with Brewster County reporting only 28 212 dollars in E bonds sold toward a 108 00 quota. The county’s Mighty 7th quota is 228 000, with total sales just over 70 000 to date, including 21 000 by Southern Pacific and 10 000 by Brewster County.

McMurry Chanters To Perform At ME Church Next Week

The McMurry Chanters from McMurry College Abilene will give a concert at the Bel bel church next Thursday evening May 24 at 8 oclock. The tour supports the college fund and offers travel with a string trio. Mrs Robie B Wylie heads the college fine arts department and directs the chorus.

First Annual Boy Scout Round-Up Held in Marfa Big Bend

The first annual Big Bend Round-Up in Marfa drew 126 Scouts from nine troops and 19 patrols. Alpine troops excelled with Troop 41 finishing fourth overall, while Troop 146 of the air base took the winning trophy. Troops 49 Marfa, 43 Marfa, and 41 Alpine also placed, with many earning Honor and standard banners.
