Jeff Davis Ranch Hand Found Slain

Fort Davis reports Esteban Olivas a Mexican fence crew member found slain near Willis W. McCutcheon Seven Springs ranch twenty miles north of town. A coroner ruled death by a stab wound to the heart after a daylong blood trail search. No arrest yet as of Tuesday evening.

Hiway 67 Paving Plans Completed

Plans to finish the one mile gap of U S highway 67 between Fort Stockton and the Santa Fe railroad crossing are completed. George E Kemp en resident engineer of the State Highway department said last weekend. The gap is the only unpaved section of highway 67 in Texas between Texarkana and Presidio. Ninety percent of right of way has been secured. The new route leaves U S 290 eleven miles west of Fort Stockton and connects with paving at the Santa Fe crossing twenty nine miles southwest of Fort Stockton and five miles north of the Brewster Pecos county line. It will be one of the first post war highway projects.

Hospital Opens New Plant For Formal National Hospital Day

Dr. Joel E. Wright unveils a new hospital facility across from the county courthouse, including the main building with 13 rooms and eight beds, an annex with two rooms, and a private cottage. The opening coincides with National Hospital Day, 4 to 10 p.m., inviting the public to inspect the modern plant and its services.

Alpine Seeks Clean Up Drive By Civic Groups

A meeting with the mayor and civic club representatives formed a sanitation committee to launch a week by week cleanup campaign in Alpine. The plan targets flies and garbage, weeds and overhanging limbs, urging residents to tidy properties and use proper trash receptacles while supporting the town’s broader beautification program.

Alpine PTA Set Endyear Meeting With Tea and Music

Alpine PTA will close its year with a musical program and tea on Monday May 14 at 3 45 pm in the high school auditorium. Installation of officers for the coming year will be held. The meeting is moved up one week from the original date. Reporter

Fellowship Postponed By Local Chamber Group

The Men's Fellowship meeting scheduled for the second Tuesday was postponed to Tuesday evening May 15 at 7 20 p m due to this week’s V E Day Thanksgiving service. Scholastic Census Totals for Alpine and Region

The 1945 scholastic census shows a total of 1140, down from 1044 the previous year. Enumerator M. P. Slover reports counts: 378 African American, 756 Latin American, six Negro scholars, with Anglo American 37 fewer than 1944 and Latin Americans up 16. Alpine totals 114, down 21 from 1944.

Alpine Masons Celebrate Debt Free Lodge With Barbecue

Alpine Lodge 168 A F and A M hosts Masons from the area for a barbecue at Kok emot Lodge tomorrow evening at 30. The event marks paying off all indebtedness on the lodge building. All Masons of Alpine are invited, followed by a lodge meeting at the hall.

Fort Davis 1-Act Play Wins State Meet at Austin

Fort Davis one act play "On Vengeance Height" won district Interscholastic honors and secured first at the state meet in Austin May 3 and 4. Cast included Amy Lou Bloys Jane McIntosh John Kimball Miller and Foster Granger. Additional notes cite judge praise for mood and acting integration and the Fort Davis contingent accompanying officials and staff.

V-E Day Observed Quietly In Alpine

1st Lt. Richard L. Burcham of Alpine received two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters to the Air Medal for meritorious achievement after completing 68 bombing missions in the Jungle Air Force against Japanese airfields and installations in the Southwest Pacific. He is a graduate of Alpine High School and his wife Margaret resides in Portland, Oregon.

Rev Buhler resigns to accept Dalhart church call

Rev. M. A. Buhler resigns as pastor of the Alpine Christian church to become pastor of the First Christian church in Dalhart. He has served Alpine twice since 1936 and previously led the Marfa and Rio churches. He has been active in civic affairs and is a longtime Mason and Rotarian.

Teens Admit Series of Burglaries in Alpine

Local teens, three Mexican youths, confessed to four burglaries in Alpine over recent weeks. A recovered gun linked the group to the Tomas Valadez More burglary. two tires from Brewster County Motors found at a road camp near Terlingua. One Mexican man faces grand jury charges after being held on a $1000 bond for receiving stolen goods. Burglaries tied to Brewster County Motors, Alpine Wool and Mohair, Alpine Feed, Storey Whiteside Lumber, and the Valadez store. The Alpine Saddlery break-in involved a larger cash loss not linked to the youths.

Dr Hawkins Named New Head of Sul Ross College

Dr R M Hawkins of Huntsville has been elected president of Sul Ross College succeeding Dr H W Morelock who retires at term end. Hawkins has seven years as Huntsville school superintendent and co operative work with the teachers college there. He previously led Mexia schools and holds an MA from SMU and a PhD from Texas University.
