In Alpine Texas two state highway patrolmen G P Town send and W F Davidson cover a vast district of Jeff Davis Presidio Brewster and Terrell counties plus bits of Val Verde and Pecos. Their route spans about 230 miles along US 90 to Culberson and 130 miles north to Presidio with many roads in between. They issue licenses aid game wardens deter overloaded trucks and keep traffic lawful.

Work Begins Paving U S Highway 67 Strip Near Alpine

A Texas state highway crew started paving a roughly 20 mile stretch of U S Highway 67 from its junction with U S 90 east of Alpine toward Pecos County. The project employs several trucks and is expected to take two to three months, with more than 300 miles of Alpine to Fort Stockton still awaiting work. Right of way for this section is not yet secured. U S 67 remains a major route from Texarkana to the Mexican border at Presidio.

Scholastic Census Count in Alpine District

A total of 1125 scholastics were enumerated in the Alpine Independent school district this year, per M. P. Slover who completed the census last weekend. The count is eight fewer than last year. American families with scholastic age children average 1.7 per family, Mexican families average 2.7, with five colored children listed.

Easter Seals sale nets 81.76 in county drive

A total of 81.76 was realized from the sale of Easter seals at the county health unit session held Monday. The sponsor noted contributions to the crippled children's fund may still be made even though Easter has passed.

Change in Park Meet Plans in Fort Worth

Directors of the Texas Big Bend Park association move their May 12 Alpine meeting to Mineral Wells at 4 p m to align with the West Texas chamber of commerce convention. The group seeks Texas first national park and invites all district and county chairmen to join. Letters have been mailed by Amon Carter to directors and chairmen.

Cameraman Lamb Begins Park Area Tour for Film

Jack Lamb, famed cameraman on ing, starts movie expedition in Big Bend National Park area. He visits H L Kobernot & Son ranch north of Alpine for wildlife shots of antelope bands. Texas Big Bend Park Association's Harry Connelly joins with W J Newell and Nelson Lee to accompany. The group plans Santa Helena canyon trip, Mexico crossings at Boquillas and Del Carmen range, and an extensive Chisos Mountains tour. Shows of Lamb's pictures are planned in 10 Texas cities next month.

Poppy Day Observed by Rotary Area in May Shoot Recap

Rotary sponsored rifle day featured 125 junior competitors aged 14 to 15 or younger at 25 yards with 48 scoring above 40 and Jo Lane claiming first with a perfect 50. Seniors at 50 yards saw Floyd Dalton win with 45 as Fern Matthews tied for second and later prevailed. Helpers listed included F P Reeder and F G Catron as the event wrapped. Sul Ross Reunion Date Set for Homecoming Event

Ex students of Sul Ross State college will gather May 16 and 17 for a homecoming that features a formal review of the college military unit. Seventy students from Company A, Texas Defense Third Battalion, will demonstration maneuvers at Jackson Field Saturday 3 to 3:30 PM after five months of training. Alpine American Legion, officers from other Third Battalion companies in Big Ber and Ft Russell will attend. The two day program marks a year of expanded health and physical activities emphasizing intramural sports and national defense readiness, with softball tennis bowling boxing volleyball and golf contests and a Saturday night dance.

Amendment Would Retain Rights To Minerals On State Lands

The Texas House split over a $1.5 million park land purchase for Big Bend, backing an amendment to reserve mineral rights on most park lands except public school tracts. The Morris amendment, favoring state mineral rights, passed 72 to 48, while opponents argued the timing and feasibility of development and mineral prospects.
