Sul Ross State College to award 156 degrees Sunday

Commencement exercises for 156 Sul Ross State College seniors will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Main Auditorium. Speaker Dr. James F. Rogers of the Health, Education and Welfare department in Washington, D.C. will address graduates. Degrees will be conferred by Dr. L. Harlan Ford. The Sul Ross Choir will provide music. Invocation by Rev. C W Newbill and organist Miss Ellen Boyd. Dr. Rogers, Kentucky born, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas and has held multiple university posts before joining HEW in 1951.

Justice Douglas Continues Big Bend Explorations in West Texas

Supreme Court Justice William Douglas spent nine days visiting Big Bend country and the proposed Guadalupe National Park. The itinerary included Marathon, Castelon, McKittrick Canyon, Fort Davis, and Big Bend National Park with stops at Gage Holland Ranch and the Rio Grande Village development. He noted plans for a future return to further study the region and its natural and cultural features.

Mrs Wright Improves as Alpine Woman Returns to Work

Betsey Wright arrived in Alpine from El Paso where she had stayed with her mother Mrs Joel Wright for two weeks. Doctors report Mrs Wright is improving and she plans to be back in Alpine and at work in a few weeks.

Occupational Survey In Alpine Initiated For Vocational Education

An occupational survey to assess job training needs in Alpine Public Schools began this week led by School Supt Jack Brock with assistance from George Preston of the Texas Education Agency. If approved, training could start next September with a committee named by High School Principal Clarence Winn and a plan involving half day academics and on the job training for junior and senior students.

Nursing Home Vote Planned in Brewster County

Citizens of Brewster County may vote on building a county operated rest home in Alpine. County Judge Felix McGaughy announced the plan after the commissioners court voted unanimously to apply for Hill-Burton funds and to hold a county wide election within 90 days. May 31 1965 is the funds deadline, with withdrawal possible if rejected.

18th Sul Ross Invitational Intercollegiate Rodeo Opens Tonight

The 18th annual Sul Ross State College Invitational Rodeo brings 12 colleges to Alpine for a three day event with performances at 8 p m Thursday and Friday and 2 p m Saturday. Participants include Sul Ross Eastern New Mexico State University and Texas Tech among others. Parade marks Western Week with Sul Ross and Alpine High School bands. Jury of officials led by arena director Jim Espy and secretary Judy Overturff oversee events such as bareback and saddle bronc riding calf roping and steer wrestling.

1875 Retreat Parade Heard at Fort Davis on May 16

Fort Davis will present the authentic 1875 retreat parade sounds on Sunday May 16 in two 18 minute taped programs at 1 pm and 4 pm. Franklin Smith of the National Park Service will visit while Ned Hockman directs recording for the university. The program features the Lawton High School Band and Fort Sill Army bands with selections including Garryowen and Hail Columbia.

Comptroller Appointed at Sul Ross State College

Jack Minnox, longtime Texas auditor, is confirmed acting comptroller by the Board of Regents in Austin. He succeeds Dr Mayron Shields who served since January after the death of Jack Stovell. Minnox will move his family from Holland to Alpine to join him. New owners William and Gwen Peck take over the Ponderosa Motor Inn in Alpine with two children, Aby and Mark, enrolled locally.

Cemetery entrance gate proposal sparks rural infrastructure debate

The community discusses whether to erect a new gate or cattle guard at Marathon Cemetery entrance. A request for a new Farm to Market road was denied due to exhausted funds in Brewster County.
