At the regular Alpine American Legion Auxiliary meeting on May 17 seven Alpine Public School pupils received awards for the poppy contest. Winners include Cam Corkins first in Class II for grades 7 8 9 and Cheryl Winter second.
Guy Woodruff III was named Driver of the Month by Pilot Safe-Teens Club at the final high school meeting. Honorable mention went to Palmer Coats, Tommy Weston, and Jacobina Skinner. Dorothy McBride presented awards and announced the upcoming Driver of the Year at the May 21 high school awards assembly.
Centennial School holds its commencement at 7 30 p m on Monday May 24 in the Alpine High School Auditorium with processional invocation diplomas and songs led by Principal Charles E Wade and Supt Jack G Brock Central School follows at 7 30 p m Tuesday May 25 in the same venue with processional invocation salutatory valedictory special awards and diplomas under Principal Guy C Woodruff and Supt Brock Also noted are visits by Mr and Mrs Loyd Webb of Post who toured Big Bend National Park during their stay with Mrs Guida Wilson.
Alpine receives a 9210 pre school aid grant and lists Alpine High School graduates for the baccalaureate and commencement services. The baccalaureate is May 23 and the commencement May 26 at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.
Dr Frances Phillips, chair of the Methodist Student Center Board, names Don T Johnson as the new Wesley Foundation minister. Johnson will arrive at Sul Ross June 1 to replace Bruce Felker and has held multiple youth and pastor roles in Texas from 1957 to 1962 including Fort Worth Fort Hancock El Paso and Chatfield Circuit. Johnson recently completed studies at Perkins School of Theology SMU Dallas and earned a BA in psychology from Texas Western College in 1961.
Alpine Independent School District receives 9.2 from the Office of Economic Opportunity to fund an eight week preschool program for 65 children beginning June and ending July 30. Classes at Central and Centennial Schools include health examinations and activities, with non English speaking help continuing. Congressman Richard White aided the Alpine project.
Executive Director Frank W. Raymond Jr. of the Texas Aeronautics Commission backs a $5,000,000 jet airstrip proposal for Big Bend National Park. Plan calls for a 10,000-foot main runway with NPS and FAA cost sharing, plus terminals, hangars, radio beacons, a 200-unit motor hotel, and lodge cabins. Support comes from Gov. Connally’s tourism program and lawmakers Rep. Richard White, J. J. Pickle, Walter Rogers, and Sen. Ralph Yarborough. Nearest landing strips are a private Rosillas Mountains Ranch site 14 miles north and a Terlingua county strip 35 miles northwest.

Dorothy Morgan from Sul Ross College will travel home to El Paso between terms to accompany her parents Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Morgan to see her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Morgan in Amarillo.
Dr and Mrs AJ R Ponton and their children spent the weekend in Chihuahua City Mexico.
