Deadline set for county nursing home Hill Burton funds
May 31 1965 is the deadline to file applications with state and federal officials to access Hill Burton Act funds for a Brewster County nursing home. LVN School Set to Open in Alpine This June
A Licensed Vocational Nurses program will open in Alpine around June 1 with Mrs Roberta Shorit teaching, per Paul Vogt Brewster County Memorial Hospital board chairman. The 12 month course includes a 14 day vacation or sick leave and about 20 students are expected to enroll. The first course will meet at Alpine High School with hospital work.

Silvia Bell Cavness 84 died Tuesday night April 27 at her daughter’s home in Sanderson after moving from Marathon for health reasons. Funeral held April 29 at Mother Holmes Memorial Baptist Church Sheffield with Janes Funeral Home Ozona in charge. Born May 15 1880 in Van Zandt she married William Cavness in 1903 Palo Pinto. Survivors include 3 sons 6 daughters 25 grandchildren 30 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Burial Sheffield Cemetery.

Will Drill Test Wells For City
Hydrologist Ed Reed of Midland notified the City Council last week about drilling test wells in Alpine. Wells will be drilled in the Daugherty well area and elsewhere as part of the water exploration project. Reed reported at the Thursday meeting on April 29 and the council authorized Kenneth Esmond and Associates to study a retainer dam at Sunny Glen to collect rain water and recharge the basin. A survey on water flow by Esmond will help determine storage capacity in Sunny Glen.

Adjuster Walter N. Harrison Sets Alpine Insurance Office
Walter N. Harrison formerly of Florence Alabama has moved to Alpine to set up an insurance adjuster service with headquarters at the Ponderosa Motel until a home is found. He will be joined by his wife Maurine and children after summer term, with son Walter Jr. attending Sul Ross State College. Harrison, a 16 year veteran adjuster and World War I veteran, has lived in Sherman Abilene Shreveport and Florence and was once mayor of Florence. The family attends the Methodist Church. Sul Ross Rodeo team plans to compete in Lubbock after a first place at New Mexico State University Rodeo in Las Cruces.
