Sul Ross G grads hear state regent at spring exercises
State Regent W H Frank Barnes of the Teachers Colleges Board of Regents will give the commencement address at Sul Ross State College. Eighty seven seniors will receive degrees at 6 p m on Sunday May 22 in Alpine. Barnes has long public service ties including roles in the legislature and the East Texas Chamber of Commerce. The college combines Baccalaureate and Commencement for the first time this year to ease attendance for relatives and friends.

Funeral services for William G. Teske 71 who died in Denver Colo are set for 3 pm today at the First Methodist Church. He died at his daughter Mrs Leslie Speer’s home after months of illness born February 16 1864 in Cypress Wharton County. He worked in farming then moved to Alpine for health in 1917. He was linked with L T Votaw Magnolia Petroleum distributor and with Votaw’s sons Reginald and Frank at Brewster County Motors. Married Annie Chudalin in 1911 she died 1952. Interment Elm Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers Reginald Votan Frank Votan A J Joyce G B Crawford Paul Vogt Frank Daughtery. Surviving are his daughter C W Speer of Keesler AFB Biloxi Miss a brother and five sisters.

Repairs On Riess Well Delays Drilling Progress
After depth of about 100 feet, the Riess well near Simi California was shut down Tuesday morning for repairs by driller Paul Gooden. Mayor Hugh White and City Commissioners discussed with Stephan Riess by phone. Riess remains confident water will be reached soon. The well had paused two weeks earlier for a cement plug to prevent caverns and resumed drilling into a hard calcite formation.

Brewster Reports No Polio Symptoms After Vaccine
Dr. Joel Wright, Brewster County health officer, said no polio symptoms have appeared in any child who received the first Salk vaccine. A second shipment is due this weekend and will be distributed to local doctors. All first and second graders will receive three free Salk polio Shots through the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Beep Cain Wins Soap Box Derby in Rotary Youth Week event
Jack Stone topped the College Ave derby in the Rotary Youth Week program earning $10 in the ball bearing class while Lee Anderson took second. Beep Cain won for the little boys non ball bearing, with prizes ranging from $5 to $2 for other top finishes. The event also honored best engineered, most original, most attractive and car resemblance. Several boys wrecked cars received 50 cents. The Milwaukee Braves baseball school returns to Koker Not Field June 22 to 25 led by Braves scout Earle W Halstead and possibly Hall of Fame inductee Paul Waner with Snipe Conley assisting per last weekend’s announcement.

Funeral Held For T. C. Nutt
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church for Thomas C. Nutt 60 a World War I veteran who died Sunday in the Veterans Hospital at Big Spring. Born in Georgetown he moved to Alpine with the Orient Railroad and lived there most years. He worked at Laughlin Air Force Base Del Rio during World War II and at Marfa Alpine Airbase for four years. Survived by his widow Stella Nicoll six brothers and three sisters the service was conducted by Rev. Glenn Bales with Big Bend Post No 79 American Legion in charge at Elm Grove Cemetery interment with pallbearers and a bugler.
