Youth Week Track Contests Held in Alpine
About 175 Alpine first through sixth graders participated in Rotary Kid Track Meet events at the high school football field. Organizers included coaches Milch Winter Kelley Francois Robinson Rog ers and Rotary President Fred Williams who presented prizes and thanked contributors for the 72 possible winners. The event lasted 45 minutes amid strong winds and prize distribution followed by kite fliers contest and planned rifle and Soap Box derby activities postponed or adjusted due to weather.

Capt. Frank A. Hamer Jr state game warden supervisor in this area for three years is being transferred to Brownwood to optimize use of the department air plane based at Marfa Alpine Airport. The move affects area operations for four to six weeks and a successor will be sent when the next class graduates from the game warden school May 30. The department has two planes and the state is being divided geographically for more efficient coverage.

Big Bend Area Hit By Wide Rain Showers And Hail
Moisture ranging from showers to near cloudbursts swept the Big Bend Davis Mountains region since last Friday with heavy falls on the Glass Mountains east slope. Four to six inches and hail up to four feet along Highway 90 between Altuda and Marathon were reported Wednesday. Towns and ranches logged varied amounts including 1.50 inches at Sohl and Meriwether Ranches, 1.30 at King Terry, and 1 inch at Nevill, with heavy rain extending to Study Butte. Terlingua Creek area recorded the highest in years. Some locales north of Alpine saw 0.30 inch while rain stretched from Fort Davis to the McDonald Observatory. The Rio Grande area reported showers, rain, and downpours through Friday night into Sunday night. (Continued on Page 5).

Lodge To Honor Former Masters at Alpine May Night
Alpine Lodge No 66 AF and A M will hold Past Masters Night on Saturday May 14 with past masters presiding in degree work.
