Baccalaureate and Graduation Plans Highlight Alpine Event

Alpine prepares for baccalaureate services at 3 p m Sunday May 15 at the Marfa Alpine Airport and High School Auditorium. Rev Streetman and Rev Bristol lead the service with Williams and Hegel providing music. Alpine High School graduation events run May 23 25 with grade ceremonies and a central high school commencement. Alpine High boys win state debate title in Austin

Alpine High School debaters led by Miss Myrtle Whiteside claim the state championship at the University of Texas Speech Building in Austin. Debaters Boyd Armstrong and Chuck Stringfellow defeated Woodville High School by two votes after earlier wins over Angleton and a girls’ team runner-up finish. The girls, Carol Vogt and Carlene Hegelund, beat Commerce High School by 41 points, with Alpine’s team repeating as runners-up in state with Whiteside’s protégés set to return next year.

Two Killed In Car Accident Near Alpine

Hardy Cade of New Bern and his infant child died when their rental car veered off a westbound US 90 mile marker 30 miles west of Alpine. Mrs. Cade said the bodies would be sent to New Bern for burial. Kyle King, 33, was a passenger and his body was sent to Miami for burial. Cade’s wife survives with two other children.

Mrs Forchheimer’s Mother Dies in Tyler Funeral held for A Golernnek at 84

Mrs A Golernnek 84 mother of Mrs Forchheimer died Sunday in Tyler. Funeral held Tuesday afternoon in Tyler with Mr and Mrs Paul Forchheimer present. Golernnek was a pioneer Tyler resident and mother of 12 children, 10 living. Hugh White returned from Corpus Christi where he attended a Texas Good Neighbor Commission meeting, accompanied by his daughter Betty Brahm from Texas City.

Alpine School Board on Tuesday named Guy C. Woodruff principal of Central School succeeding D. E. Jones who will become superintendent of Morethom Schools next fall. Price Daniel Wins Jeff Davis Voting

Correct figures show that Gov. Price Daniel won in Jeff Davis County voting last Saturday and not Jack Cox as had been reported previously. Daniel received 105 votes to 103 for Cox. Rep Richard Slack 129 Candle 45. Of 212 allots cast County Democratic Chairman Barry Scobee received all 212, being re elected for his ith term. U S Rep J T Rutherford received 209 votes.

Cartwright Funeral Held for Alpine Civic Leader

Mrs. Perry Cartwright 66 a longtime Alpine resident died of a heart condition in an El Paso hotel room after dental work. Funeral services were Sunday at the Alpine First Methodist Church, with Rev. Rob Baird officiating. Burial followed in Jim Grove Cemetery. She was born Inez Heard in Graham Texas and married in 1910. She and her husband moved to Alpine in 1912 where he ranching. She held leadership roles in the Alpine Study Club WSCS church auxiliaries and local garden and hospital groups. She is survived by her husband a sister and two brothers.

Christians To Open Upholstery Shop in Alpine

Mr and Mrs R W Christian move from Sanderson to Alpine and will open Christian's Upholstery and Drapery Shop at 405 E Holland Ave The new shop offers custom drapes and full upholstery with work experience dating back to 1953 in Odessa and later in Mobil Oil Co drilling department. They have two children Rita and Roy. The location is near Brewster County Motors.
