Nearly Two Tons of Clothing Collected in Brewster County
Nearly two tons of serviceable clothing shoes and bedding were donated during the United Clothing Collection in Brewster County. Mrs A F Robinson chairman announced. Seventy big boxes totaling 3828 pounds were shipped via S P railroad on Wednesday. The drive closed Monday with late bundles on Tuesday and Wednesday. Local volunteers sorted packed garments from midweek through Tuesday. Fort Davis contributed 589 pounds. Appreciation extended to contributors and those who funded cleaning and laundering.

Local Rains Hit Highland Area Early Week
Local rains and showers swept much of Highland country last Monday with Alpine gauge reporting .16 inch. Most areas saw moisture under a quarter inch. Warm, windy days followed with a high of 87 and a low of 47 as northeast winds cooled conditions. Chamber of commerce urges participation.

Sugar Ration Cut For Next Period
The Office of War Information announced a 25 percent sugar cut and a rock bottom national sugar reserve. Stamp No 36 covers five pounds for four months, with 70 percent of 1944 canning sugar and a 18 pound 1945 limit, plus a 120 pound family cap. Institutional users face reductions and bakers and canners will see lower allotments on July 1.

Rev Pearse To Conduct Revival At Alpine Nazarene Church
Rev George Pearse of Carlsbad New Mexico an established Nazarene evangelist will lead a revival series at the Alpine Nazarene Church starting Sunday and continuing through May The preacher is described as a seasoned minister a strong speaker and an appealing evangelist The services will be in the Seion Hall with Pastor Rev David Walworth returning from Fort Bayard Veterans Hospital for treatment and expected to be home soon

Texas State Guard Alerted in Alpine for Three Weeks
Units of the Texas State Guard in Alpine are alerted effective midnight April 28 for three weeks or until released. An emergency call will be four blasts on the fire siren. Officers and men are ordered to report for duty if the call is made. Business firms are asked to assist guardsmen and bring them quickly to duty. Co operation of the public is urged and Capt Morris A Webb commands Ha Co 3rd Bn.

Summer School In Chihuahua Is Set
A six weeks summer school will be conducted in Chihuahua City Mexico by Sul Ross college. Courses include Mexican Folklore History of the Americas Latin America History of Mexico Spanish and Modern Novel. The program covers transportation from Alpine lodging meals and fees totaling 190. Work Starts On New Bay‑Area Bus Station
Construction has begun on a modern bus terminal near the post office in the Trane Pecce area for Bay Coches. The hollow site building will include waiting rooms and rest facilities and is slated for completion in about 60 days. Army Air Field To Be Closed May 25
S. M. Melton, district deputy state superintendent since 1940, will become superintendent of the Kermit schools on June 1. He previously led Alpine schools from 1922 to 1927 and Cuero for 11 years, and has served as deputy for Districts 13 and 14 from El Paso to Del Rio. Tragic Death of 11 Year Old Run Over by Truck
An 11 year old, sdury Les, daughter of Pablo Rivera, died instantly when she fell under a loaded truck just east of a Catholic church. Witnesses said several children ran alongside the vehicle and the girl tipped, the rear wheel passing over her. Driver J C Wade of Alpine was cleared of blame after an investigation. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon with burial in the local cemetery.

Report Says Army Air Field To Be Placed Inactive Status
The Marta Army Air Field between Marta and Alpine will enter an inactive status around May 28 after the current class of cadets graduates May 23. Congressman R E Thomason cited military affairs sources, though officials gave no formal statement. The field, active a little over two years, spurred growth in Marta and Alpine as troops moved through.

New Shoe Ration Stamp Valid August First
The OPA says a new shoe ration stamp will be valid August 1. Airplane stamps 1 2 and 3 in Book 3 remain valid indefinitely with the new coupon. Officials say the nine month interval replaces the old twice yearly issuance due to heavy military demand and tight retail shoe inventories.

The Alpine Mexican colony will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with songs and dances at Sul Ross auditorium tomorrow at 6 pm. Local authorities and other prominent persons have been invited by the Mexican consul. The fiesta closes with a dance until midnight in the sessions room of the A. T. U. hall in South Alpine.
