Jam Ashburn recounts tales from the Trans Pecos with notes on a cave lodging nickname Hotel de Hobo near San Gerson. More than 300 teachers gathered for the annual Pecos area Teachers Institute held Friday and Saturday in Le Toupe College Auditorium. Dr HW Morlock welcomed attendees while Dr Pred Ayer from the University of Tem spoke on guiding principles in curriculum review. Local leaders presented on activity programs and educational numbers were shared by glee clubs and bands from Alpine, Fort Stockton and McCamey. About 600 out of town residents were in attendance during the two days. J E Gress of Marta was elected president with H G Beorest and Murry H Py named to the executive committee.
Sul Ross journalism students earned honors at the Intercollegiate Press Association gathering in Huntsville over the weekend. Miss Marbeth Curry was elected president, Miss Norabel Hollebeke editor, and Mrs Margaret Bownds treasurer. Sul Ross will host next year’s meeting, and a Sul Ross Skyline story by Harper Sparks won first in the contest. Attendees included Curry Hollebeke Bownds and instructor Dr J. L. Jason.
Rotary clubs move forward with a May 18 carnival to be held on downtown streets. Committees organize the frolic with Rotary Anns assisting. Proceeds will help pay the Boy Scout clubhouse indebtedness on South HLMl, completed months ago.
National Sportsman notes a Civil War era Colt cap and ball pistol recovered from Galveston Island with serial 98784, tied to 1869 New Year events. An Alpine resident, T A Beard, holds an earlier gun numbered 30168 and inherited scabbard carried by his grandfather.
Dr Selvig, a dentist with a four year practice in Alpine, left last week for his former Minnesota home to open an office there. Mrs Selvig and their daughter have resided in Minnesota for two years. health concerns forced her to return and he follows to be with his family.
A 150 slide collection of Big Bend Davis mountains views will be shown at the courthouse next Thursday evening at 7 20. The photographs by W D Smithers were bought by the local chamber of commerce and will be shared with schools and other groups across the state. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
The local relief office reports recent gifts of curio rocks for the Sul Ross campus entrance gate. Donors include Sheriff Gourley County Surveyor Gard and J. Cartwright. H. & Smith urge immediate work on the gate and aim to start soon with further splendifferent donations.
Commencement exercises for Al ine High school will be held May 30. The graduating class exceeds 40 students with some finishing after summer school. a full list is not yet available. Baccalaureate services are set for Sunday evening May 26 and Senior night will be observed May m. Julia Gentry is valedictorian and Richard Lewis is salutatorian.
Hundreds of Sul Ross exes and other visitors descend on Alpine for Homecoming and Play Day events. Archery rifle tennis volleyball tumbling golf horseshoes swimming track and more precede a big football game between Sul Ross Lobos and St Marys Rattlers. A smoker breakfast and dance accompany the weekend activities as ex-students gather amid dust storms and schedule changes.
W M Sanford aged 99 died here Sunday night and was buried Monday after funeral services at the Methodist church with Rev R F Davis officiating. He had lived in Alpine since 1904, served in the Civil War, and founded the Trans Pecos Abstract company. Survived by wife Mary P Hall, six of eleven children, four sons, two daughters, and a half brother. Mrs Slight of Alpine is among survivors. Pallbearers named.
Del Rio directors approve funding a college football game this fall. St Marys University of San Antonio will meet Sul Ross in Del Rio during Thanksgiving holidays. The teams have played once this spring, St Marys winning 20 to 19, with a second spring game set for Alpine on May 4. Athletic committee members are W. B. Stevenson, John Rowland, and J. C. Dudney, with R. M. Crosby assisting.
Extensive remodeling is under way at Morrison's Quarters run by G. Morrison and a group of 10 store quarters. Work started at the beginning of the week and includes modifying display windows and installing a new floor. Estimated total cost about 9000.
Brewster County reports eighteen new car and truck registrations in April bringing the year total to 72. The list names buyers in Alpine Presidio Marathon and Alpine Drug Store, with several Ford Plymouth and Chevrolet models. A noted exemption issue involved trucks obtained from the highway department in Austin. Highway Commissioner D. K. Martin and HL Kokernot visited the Kokernot ranch near Alpine for a brief outing.
Lobos outplayed the Texas Tech Matadors through a scoreless first half but fatigue and a fresh Matador squad in the second half produced two quick touchdowns. Tech won 14 to 0 as Ross Lobos fought with 20 men while Pete Cawthorn leveraged deeper reserves.
Mrs. Mary Garnett held the lucky number drawn at Granada Theater Money Night and was awarded the $25 cash prize. Another $25 prize will be offered next Tuesday night.
Alpine hosts the Sixth District Federation of Women's Clubs with 173 delegates and visitors registering for the opening session in Sul Ross auditorium. Mrs. Joseph M. Perkins of Eastland presided as the district covers 46 counties and 70348 square miles. A breezy welcome, new club formations, a Skyline Drive barbecue, and a Marfa History Club tea with a $100 memorial gift marked the program as organizers toured Davis Mountains and Mt. Locke Observatory before a windy return to Alpine.
