Citizens of Sierra Blanca under a chamber of commerce committee have bought the capital stock and title to the Sierra Blanca waterworks for a nominal sum. They plan to finance the project with a federal loan and operate the system, aiming to complete preparations within six months.
Senator Morris Sheppard telegram from Washington confirms the second battalion of the Seventy Seventh Artillery, about 500 men and 18 officers, will relocate from Fort Sill Oklahoma to re garrison Fort D. A. Russell Marfa’s economy has suffered since government withdrawal and the move is scheduled between September and December this year with 155 mm howitzer guns capable of roughly five miles range.

M P Slover reports a high 1995 total of children of school age in the Alpine Independent school district spanning Brewster County, with 481 Americans and 618 Mexicans among 1114 enumerated, only nine Negro children, most reside in Alpine city limits. last year’s total was 1063.
Contestants from Alpine Marfa, Davis Valentine McCamey and Rankin will compete in the Southwest Texas Piano and Violin tournament at Sul Ross College next Saturday. Miss Irna Lee Batey heads the music department and announces a morning meeting at 8:30 a.m. with contest details, followed by finals at 1:45 p.m. The event is open to the public.
Dr J Mr Martin of Baylor University Hospital Dallas will lecture at the Junior High auditorium on May 3 as part of the Sixth District Federation meeting. W. J. Eckles 80 died at his son's home after a paralytic stroke Tuesday afternoon. He had lived with Rev. C. H. Eckles, pastor of the Assembly of God, since April 8, moving here from Haskell. Born February 14, 1855 in Fort Wayne Indiana, he spent most of his life in Tennessee. Survived by daughter Mrs. J. M. Stafford Phoenix Arizona and three sons J. E. Eckles Long Beach California G. W. Eckles Acmer Alabama and Rev. C. H. Eckles Alpine. Funeral held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Livingston Funeral Home chapel. Rev. R. F. Davis of the Methodist church officiated. Interment Elm Grove Cemetery.
The Big Bend region saw varied weather with scattered showers Friday and Saturday, totaling up to about half an inch in some areas while drouth persists. Kokernot and Nevill ranches south of Alpine reported decent rains on parts of their ranges, and a quarter inch fell at the Kokernot headquarters in the Davis Mountains. A heavy rain occurred between Alpine and Marfa with no damage, and snow fell between Van Horn and Sierra Blanca. Alpine area saw only a light sprinkle.
An American Legion band is to be formed from the best musicians in the 16th district of Texas to represent the district at the state convention in Dallas in September. Twenty one towns will be represented, and the group will stay in Dallas throughout the convention to boost West Texas. Chambers of commerce across the district are asked to provide literature for distribution by band members during the state meeting.
Fort Davis hosts the twentieth annual convention of the Sixth District Texas Federation of Women's Clubs starting next Wednesday. An estimated 100 out of town delegates will attend with events at Sul Ross College and the Holland hotel. Highlights include Presidents' Evening, a luncheon, entertainment, a Pine Arts program, and a busi ness session with a wagon dinner and art exhibit.
A Wednesday afternoon fire heavily damaged the two story garage apartment of Wells McIntyre on College Hill. Occupant Jack Mitchell, recently arrived from San Diego, was away for several hours when he found the blaze. Fire started from wiring and damaged upstairs bathroom and bedroom, furnishings in two rooms, and personal effects. The house and contents were insured.
A Buick sedan belonging to Peix McGauphy was stolen Sunday night during church services and recovered Monday morning near Marathon. The car was undamaged except for the ignition being turned on and the battery drained. Michael Dring of Cardiff testified that his wife had spoken to him only twice in five years.
El Paso High School places strong in Region 8 meet with Hardee Cobos finishing second in the pole vault event. Montgomery, Aidan, and Ausen also place among top finishers as El Paso schools claim multiple spots at the track and field competition amid about 260 contestants.
Drilling at the King-Franklin test on the Gage ranch south of Marathon has resumed after a several week pause following an oil showing. Depth reached about 722 feet. Other tests near Marfa Alpine report ongoing activity at 1100 feet and 600 feet while several sites show gas or water encounters. Temporary suspensions include the Dodson-Means test northeast of Alpine and a few others as operations adjust to geologic findings.
Alpine Rotarians will host a carnival in early May to raise funds. Proceeds will be used to pay off the debt on the Boy Scout clubhouse on South. Further details about the affair will be announced later.
