Joint Concert Set for May 5

The Sul Ross singers and the Odessa String Quartet will present a combined concert May 5 in the Sul Ross Main Auditorium at 3 30 p m. The program features Bach Cantata No 4 Christ Lay in the Bonds of Death for soloists choir strings and organ. The Odessa String Quartet Op 59 No 1 Ra soumousky by L Vs Beeth oven and Liebeslieder Waltes by Brahms will be sung by the Sul Ross Singers. Conducted by Dr Robert Calder of Sul Ross. Central to Hold Little Olympics

Central School will hold its annual Little Olympics May 9 10. Students from grades 3 to 7 will take part and ribbons will be awarded to first second and third places in each event. The public is invited to attend.

The Alpine Study Club member Western District Federated Womens Clubs awarded a $100 per semester scholarship to Abelardo Baeza. Mrs. Robert Orr of Monahans announced the funds will cover his freshman year in college.

Cemetery Dinner Grosses $975.25 At Legion Hall

The annual cemetery dinner held Saturday April 27 at the American Legion Hall grossed $975.25 including donations. The money supports cemetery upkeep as dues fall short, with officials thanking contributors and members.

Four FFA Teams Vie at Lubbock in Texas Tech Contests

Alpine FFA and four teams competed in area and Tech judging contests in Lubbock last Saturday. Wool judging team tied for 4th with Dell City in Tech and 2nd in Area II. Monroe Adamson was third high individual. Grass judging team placed 3rd in area and 6th in Tech. livestock team placed 10th in area. Dairy cattle team did not place Top 10. Over 1600 participants across 10 contests. 144 livestock, 131 dairy, 38 grass, 141 wool teams. Alpine teacher Chris Kountz lauded the year’s成果, noting one sweepstakes banner and multiple firsts.

Alpine to Host First Junior Golf Tourney June 22 23

Alpine County Club plans its inaugural Junior Golf Tournament open to all boys 12 to 15, under Texas Inter-Scholastic League rules. Qualification occurs June 22 at the Alpine course or via home pro attested average score. Four flight trophies plus medalist trophy. $3 entry includes fried chicken dinner. Alpine Boys to Attend Lone Star Boys State in 1963

Three Alpine high school students Tim Davis Benny Wright and Tony Green were nominated by their faculty and sponsored by the Alpine American Legion Post to attend the 1963 Lone Star Boys State session at the University of Texas Austin June 9 15. Larry Johnson declined due to prior commitments. The nominees reflect leadership character and scholarship with family and school ties noted.

Parade and Rodeo At Sul Ross Start Today At Four

Parade forms in front of the Administration building at 4 p.m. on the Sul Ross campus and proceeds along Holland Avenue. The three day intercollegiate rodeo begins at 8 p.m. in the college arena with teams from nine Southwestern colleges and includes about 250 competitors. Walt Alsbaugh of Alamosa Colo produces the rodeo bringing top bucking stock, while Sul Ross Rodeo Club defends as World’s College Champion. Also noted: Mrs Helen Adams Nogales Ariz former Alpine resident dies, funeral in Nogales Saturday. Barbara Adams daughter a Sul Ross graduate survives.

Alpine Civil Defense seeks volunteers for 16 and 12 hour courses

Alpine Civil Defense Director Alonzo Hord invites volunteers for five sessions of two training courses without cost to students. A 16 hour medical self help program and a 12 hour radiological monitoring course will train adults, with a 18 plus age option for the medical program and 25 plus for radiological work. Each class limited to 25, with four classes planned, and certificates issued to qualifiers.
