Alpine High names Paula Oates valedictorian and Pam Wilson salutatorian
Paula Oates earns valedictorian with a 96.58 average and multiple district honors including National Merit top 20 percent and state finalist NCTE. Pam Wilson is named salutatorian with a 93.31 average and holds NHS secretary treasurer roles plus FHA Pep Squad and Band involvement. Other top seniors include Chevyl Cox Anne Hegelund Joe Freddy Granado and Abelardo Baeza as high achievers. Dick Rogers of First National Bank donates a posting machine to the school.

About 250 to 300 visitors are expected in Alpine for the Twin Peaks Eastern Star School of Instruction for District 2 Section 9. Honor guests from Texas will attend including Mrs. Thelma McReynolds and Hal Burnett. Activities include registration May 11, a 9 am school start, luncheons, a banquet at 6 pm, and a reception Sunday. A guided Big Bend tour is planned for Monday and Tuesday.

Alpine students win top honors at Sul Ross Honors Day
Two Alpine students gained top honors at Sul Ross State College Annual Honors Day. Carlene Hegelund was named Woman of the Year and Tony Warnock Man of the Year, selections by faculty and Student Council. Carlene graduates in May with a BS in Music Education and has held multiple leadership roles. Tony, son of Dr and Mrs Barton Warnock, is a chemistry major, valedictorian of 1961 Alpine High, and will receive a BS in chemistry in August with a Wisconsin graduate assistantship.
