Alpine Garden Club Poster Contest Opens Clean-Up Drive

The Alpine Garden Club and two other groups sponsor a May city wide clean up campaign. A poster contest will be held in public schools with prizes for each grade. Posters judged by Sul Ross College art students supervised by Miss Miltia Hill.

Alpine groups urged to join Show Me tour of Big Bend

All Alpine businesses urged to send a representative on the Show Me tour of Big Bend National Park set for next Thursday May 8. The event is organized by the Big Bend National Park Development Committee and the Alpine Chamber of Commerce with support from the National Park Service and National Park Concessions.

Dow Chemical Buys Two Tracts in Brewster County

Dow Chemical Co plans expansion in North Coahuila fluorspar deposits via two Brewster County land purchases. Dow bought a 100 acre tract east of Marathon and acres in Heath Canyon near Stillwell Crossing to serve potential storage and milling operations. Traffic Safety Council Formed in Brewster County

A Brewster County Traffic Safety Council was organized on Tuesday morning in the county judge's office. Avora Owens was elected chairman, Jack Johnson vice chairman, and Joella Livingston secretary. The group cited drunk driving and high speeds as the main causes of local traffic fatalities and urged citizens to report dangerous driving by phone to law officers to prevent deaths. Recommendations were sent to Austin for a statewide educational campaign to engage the public in spotting violations. Ruth Hollingshead of Abilene, niece of Mrs. J. Kim Burgess, is visiting this week.

Alpine High Band Ranks High In Class A League Competition

Alpine High Band earned a first division trophy for sight reading and second division for concert play at the University Interscholastic League contest in Odessa on April 26. The Alpine group placed among the top two Class A bands, edging toward the leaders led by Alpine and Big Lake.

Central School Fire Quickly Extinguished

A drip pan oil fire under an oil heater in the Central School basement was quickly put out by the Volunteer Fire Dept. No damage or danger to students. Classes continued as normal. The piece describes district band ratings at Odessa contests with Alpine school leading in both sight reading and concert play. several area schools and students earned various division scores.

Master Masons Gather Here at Alpine Lodge 766 Night

About 85 Master Masons from Alpine and nearby towns attended Alpine Lodge 766 AF&AM Past Masters night. Nineteen Past Masters, led by James Rice of Alpine as candidate, conferred the Master’s degree. Earl Petross of El Paso gave the principal address on The Mason’s Obligation after a barbecue buffet.

Sul Ross Band Invited to Represent Texas in LA Event

The Sul Ross State College Band has been invited to represent Texas at the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce convention June 16 to 19 in Los Angeles. Joe Bellamah, band director, said final trip approval rests with Sul Ross administration after Jaycees from Texas urged the selection following the Battle of Flowers performance in San Antonio.

Alpine High to Perform Dino at State One Act Finals

Alpine High School competes with its one act Dino at the State UIL finals in Hogg Auditorium Austin tomorrow at about 445 PM. The 1958 Alpine cast includes 10 students plus three stage managers and sponsor Mrs. Freda Powell.

Ameri can Red Cross disaster field representative Loretta Webb will visit Alpine today and tomorrow meeting with chamber leaders and disaster chairmen at the Chamber of Commerce building to review chapter duties in disaster preparedness and operations and to outline community responsibilities.

Thurmond Jr. Seeks 100th District State Representative Post

Del Rio resident Roger Thurmond Jr. announces candidacy for state representative of the 100th Legislative District pending the Democratic Primary on July 26, 1958. He is son of a district judge, brother to the current representative, born July 11, 1934, raised in Del Rio, and pursuing a UT Law degree after Rice Institute accounting.

Thurmond will be sworn in as an attorney in Texas Supreme Court ceremonies on May 5. Road Day O Set Saturday in Big Bend District

Big Bend District of the Boy Scouts of America will hold an automobile Road Day O on Saturday May 3 at the Marfa Alpine Airport starting at 2 p.m. The event welcomes all registered Cub Scout Boy Scout and Explorer units with paid-up members and includes driving skill exercises safety instruction and car care tips supervised by Texas Highway Patrol officers Sul Ross State College driving instructors and local officials.
