Mayor Dr. W. E. Lockhart announced yesterday the present City Administration seeks a sound financial basis aided by the new Municipal Advisory Finance Committee. The panel includes T. B. Davis, an accountant.
Longtime Alpine resident Polk Hinson died last weekend leaving a legacy of storytelling in the Big Bend country. His country store at Study Butte and wax rock gag became local legends and national AP coverage.
Dr. Bryan Wildenthal of Sul Ross State College said state senior colleges will receive equal treatment under standardized appropriations. The Texas Commission on Higher Education and budget groups approved the plan, with uniform unit costs for administration, salaries, and library maintenance across all senior colleges.
Mayor Dr W E Lockhart said the water rate rose only 70 cents per month per meter. He noted a $15 bill would be $15.70 this June, adding the city gains $10,000 yearly in revenue and avoids a tax rise. Sewer rate rose to $1.50 monthly to match El Paso, also boosting revenue and preventing higher taxes. He said Alpine has operated in the red about $20,000 annually and these steps address it.
Thad Corkins is the new president of the Alpine Lions Club. New officers include Bob Halpern first vice president Billy Weston second vice president Herbert Harlow third vice president Paul Weyerts lion tamer Bob Corkins tail twister and Carl Shults Jr secretary. New directors are Ray Morrison and Dean Robertson. Holdover directors are Gene Brice and Dr W D Rich.
Mrs Lorraine Ellison of Alpine spent Sunday in town to visit friends and relatives, reporting a brief, social trip and return.
Eighteen Alpine High School students earned spots for the State Interscholastic League Meet in Austin May 1 to 3 after Alpine swept the Region VIII B spring meet in Odessa with 162 points. Contenders include Dennis Williams and Kern Wildenthal in multiple events, with Alpine placing in numerous tracks and speech events and securing top honors in one act and best actor and actress.
Ashley G Classen an El Paso engineer told City Commission on Tuesday about sewer and water issues. He proposed a 6 inch main on Avenue 6 from 8th Street to east of Gage Street and an 8 inch main from the pink tank west on Avenue B to Harrison Street then north to Avenue A and west to 7th Street with a south extension on 4th Street.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church for Wesley Marvin Roberts 45 found dead at his Alpine home from an apparent heart attack. He was a Fort Stockton native from a West Texas ranching family and longtime well driller. Survived by daughter Margie Lou Roberts of Big Spring son Wesley Lee Roberts mother Mrs. Oscar Roberts of Alpine and brother Ray Roberts of Marfa.
More than 60 University of Houston geology students toured the Big Bend area this week. Led by Dr. Robert Greenwood and James M. Taggert, the group visited the National Park Terlingua mining district Fresno mine. They traveled in six private cars and a chartered bus.
Mrs Victor Smith came back to Alpine last weekend after spending the winter in Austin with her daughter Mrs Charles Le Masters and family. Her sons Ross of Elkhart Indiana Harlan of Lubbock Hal of San Angelo and their families held a reunion in Austin during the Easter holidays. Miss Beulah Smith of Austin was included.
Sul Ross State College rodeo team captured 544 points to win the National Intercollegiate Rodeo at New Mexico A&M. Texas Tech was runner-up with 393, West Texas State third with 174, boosting Sul Ross in the Southwestern regional race. Individual honors included Jim Taylor of Texas Tech with 200 points, and Sul Ross's Jim Bausch earning runner-up all-around and multiple event placings.
Alpine Mayor Dr. W E Lockhart says a new sanitary fill will replace the present municipal dump as soon as possible. He describes the current dump as a eyesore and outlines a plan to bury waste underground then cover with soil and trees, converting the site into a city park with county bulldozer help from Gene He and Bob Valadez.
W P Polk Hinson 81 longtime Big Bend figure died in Brewster County Memorial Hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage following a stroke. He moved through Alpine Study Butte and led the first local taxi service and later ran a general store near the Big Bend National Park. Survived by widow five nieces and nephews. Pallbearers included Park figures and local professionals.
An open letter from Mayor W. E. Lockhart warns a dog poisoner in Alpine about the danger to public safety and health. The message says poison bait in city limits could kill many dogs and threaten children, with a detective investigating and potential heavy penalties. It notes Mrs. Zoye Decie is visiting her mother in Linton.
Alpine native Jesus Chuy Juarez 32 announced candidacy for county commissioner Precinct 2 in the Democratic Primary. He runs Chuy's Food Market with wife and four children, served in the Army 1948 50 during Korea, and promotes progressive community projects.
The Big Bend Soil Conservation District and Sul Ross State College sponsor a root plowing trial this afternoon on the college pasture east of Alpine. Treanor Equipment Co. provides a D 8 Caterpillar with footplow and grass seed planter, plus a D tractor with subsoilers and seeding attachment. Seed is furnished by the district. The event starts at 2 p.m.
The Alpine Cemetery Association will hold its annual barbecue at the American Legion Hall on Saturday May 10. Officers urge all residents to attend as beef and lamb barbecue will be served.
Members of the Women's Auxiliary at Brewster County Memorial Hospital are praised by hospital staff for their selfless service. They operate the PBX assist patients handle meals clerical work file records work in the nursery and help sterilize surgical supplies.
Administrators faculty and alumni urge continued athletic funding on the same basis as prior years while asking for outside support due to reduced gate receipts. The college plans a $750000 science facility and notes library and lab upgrades, plus remedial courses to assist incoming students.
Alpine Lodge No 766 AF and AM schedules Past Masters Night at Masonic Hall starting 6 p.m. with a buffet. A Master Mason degree will be conferred as past Alpine lodge masters preside. Main speaker is R E Earl Petross of Paso, a retired Southern Pacific agent and longtime Mason. A large turnout of Master Masons is anticipated.
Cecil Hale owner of Model Cleaners was reported improving yesterday at Brewster County Memorial Hospital after an appendectomy performed last week. He remains seriously ill.
