Fort Davis report notes no change in county taxation valuations under the north south zone rule. Officials list valuations for lands and livestock as set by commissioners at the recent meeting. A push continues in Washington for a $32 000 Centennial fund allocation to purchase Fort Davis for state park purposes and a frontier monument.
S P officials announced the Sunset Limited will resume service about April 26 after being discontinued in 1932. The train will arrive at Alpine from the east around 2 p m the eastbound Pound will pass through at about the same time. Definite schedule to be announced. All equipment will be air conditioned throughout. The Argonaut remains in service on this division with a similar schedule.
Two trustees for Alpine Independent School District will be chosen at an election on Saturday April 4. C H Kimball seeks re election while W J Strait appears on the ballot. No other candidates have filed to date. Drury Wood was re elected superintendent at a recent trustees meeting.
Only about half of motor vehicles are registered and drivers licensed as of yesterday morning. Tax office estimated 1645 licenses issued out of about 3000. 500 vehicles registered. Past year by April 1 about 1000 of 305 vehicles were registered. Drivers licenses may be formed and extraprities seized up to next Wednesday. Big rush expected over the weekend. last days likely swamped.
Park officials and Herbert Maier of the National Parks Service plan Brewster County Day at the Dallas Centennial exposition around July 15. A CCC building will feature park exhibits and Sul Ross College band may attend to showcase Brewster County and the Texas frontier.
Alpine swept multiple events in the county league meet held in Marathon last Friday. Winners include Declamation senior boys and girls, junior and senior essays, track and field, choral singing, and tennis doubles. Other Alpine first places cover arithmetic, memory, spelling, volleyball, and playground ball while Marathon often took seconds. District meet in Stockton runs April 8 to 11 with regional event on April 24 in this area.
Firefighters rushed to a courthouse area Wednesday to battle a truck blaze belonging to J C Wade. The flames damaged the truck cushion area but were quickly controlled with only minor damage reported.
Fort Davis March 24 Edwin H Fowlkes forty nine years old died at his home here suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday morning He had been in ill health for weeks He was in his third term as county judge of Jeff Davis county and sought re election He owned the Fowlkes ranch in the Davis mountains Fowlkes Hill bears his name Two hundred acres were donated from his ranch for land that helped form part of the McDonald Observatory He leaves a widow and seven children Curtis Everts Edwin Mannie John Prude Preston Elizabeth and Hunt plus many relatives Funeral plans had not been announced beyond burial here
The Federated Clubs sponsor a free style show at Sul Ross auditorium on Monday April 6 at 8 p m with merchants aid. Misses Bedell and McGregor will display outfits for fishing motoring church and formal events while men are included.
R A Medfurry, injured in a car crash and en route to El Paso, shows improving condition this week. Doctors report a depressed chest and other injuries but expect him to be up soon, currently at the Masonic hospital in Paso.
Spring football training enters its second week on the Lobo field with about 40 men, freshmen and varsity, reporting for daily practice. Coach B C Graves notes lineup shifts as several seniors are not out, with backfield material strong and linemen scarce. End Colvin withdrew. Murray at quarterback ill. Continued on Page Three.
J A John Ebers aged 77 or 78 died at Herbert Pruett ranch south of Alpine after staying there while Pruett was away. He was found unconscious on the floor and died before aid could reach him. Born June 7 1867 in Santa Fe New Mexico he later lived in Norway and Kiel Germany, with a long expatriate history. He was buried in Elm Grove cemetery after services Friday.
The Spring meeting of the Texas Academy of Science in conjunction with the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society will be held at S Row College on April 10. Dr. Charles N. Gould, regional geologist for the National Park Service, will lecture on ecology in Texas state parks and the geology of the Chisos area as part of a broader study including Bend International Park.
Three Mexicans linked to the Jake Hlaryus garage burglary at Mara Fedon were arrested and released on nominal bonds. Names given were Pete Monclovia Ernesto Hernandes, all of Marathon, and Julio Sanchez of Fort Stock. The sheriffs office reported the incident last week.
Floyd Williams of Alpine captured the $50 prize at the Money Night event on Tuesday. The note indicates the prize for the following week will be $25 and urges economizing to avoid future losses.
Local Centennial plans were debated at a meeting called by Mrs. C A Brown Alpine member of the Centennial Advisory board in the chamber of commerce office Tuesday. Ideas included a daily wild west show and exhibits of pioneer articles in store windows to attract visitors during the period between Baptist and Boys encampments. The celebration aims to showcase side saddles kitchen utensils and toys used by fathers mothers and grandparents and to involve children with period items. Continued on Page 2.
The State Highway Commission designated the Marathon to the Chisos Mountains park road as a state highway and will maintain it, contingent on county and city rights of way for a U S 90 re routing through Alpine. The move, possibly 122 miles, could save the county about 7000 annually. The plan includes a bridge over the arroyo and an underpass at the Santa Fe railroad on West Holland avenue, with costs to be shared by state and federal governments.
The committee chose Burke's Food Shop as the name for the new Alpine grocery opened on Fifth Street last week by Meriwether Burke. A $25 cash prize was awarded, split between Rev. Buren Sparks and Frank Parker for submitting part of the design and name. The shop’s name will appear within a heart motif in the sign.
