City Vote Set for Next Week in Alpine Election
Alpine voters will choose a mayor and two commissioners next Tuesday. They will also decide on issuing 12 000 dollars in revenue bonds to drill a water well on South Hill and connect it to city mains. Mayor Moody and Commissioner Stams seek re election. McCollum will run for the vacant seat. Me Gausby declines. Voters may write in names. Water bonds do not raise taxes as they are to be paid from water works revenue. A planned 600 foot well near the Boy Scout hut on South Hill aims to prevent summer shortages.

Style Show Monday at Sul Ross Auditorium
Plans are finalizing for a Monday style show at Sul Ross auditorium eight o'clock sponsored by Alpine Federated Clubs. Spring fashions from merchants will be displayed plus demonstrations by home economics classes. Women and men’s apparel will be shown under Miss Grace Bedell and Miss McGregor with no admission charge and a cordial public invitation.

Special Service For Rainbow Girls Sunday
A special church service for Rainbow Girls will be held Sunday evening at the Presbyterian church. The girls are to be escorted by Knights Templar. all Knights are urged to attend. Mrs. Perry Cartwright, Alpine, reports a $25 cash award for the Rainbow Girl event. Public invited to attend the Granada Theatre Money Services Night event Tuesday.

Burial of Mrs Birdie E Johnson In Alpine Area
Mrs Birdie E Johnson age 42 daughter of Mr and Mrs S F Woodward died in Bracketville hospital from pneumonia. She was buried in Elm Grove after a service at her aunt Mrs J C Bird home with Rev Buren Sparks officiating. Interment in Elm Grove cemetery. She left two sons Jack of San Antonio and Bird of Alpine. Her husband Ralph Johnson, an Army officer, survives along with her parents two brothers and a sister. Progress is noted in Chinese highway construction.

Child Seriously Injured In Park Accident In Chisos Mountains
The 18 month old son of ranchers Homer and Mrs Wilson was struck by a car at the Chisos GCC camp last Sunday. He suffered severe chest injuries multiple broken ribs and a broken shoulder but is improving. The car was driven by Elmer Devenport an engineer at the camp. The accident was described as unavoidable.

Mechanic Burned in Gas Explosion at Motor Inn Shop
Carl Thain, a local mechanic, suffered facial and hand burns when carbide gas exploded in a small building at the Motor Inn Machine shop on West College avenue as he charged a tank. The structure was badly wrecked but his injuries are not considered serious and he is expected to return to work soon.

Auto and driver's licenses show year totals and recent activity
Year 1996 saw about 972 vehicle registrations up to the April 1 final date, with 767 passenger cars, 17 commercial, and 98 farm vehicles. Driver’s licenses issued reached roughly 2,170, short of the 3,000 estimate, as the office extended hours to handle a last minute rush. March and February each registered 18 vehicles. Names and residences of new car licenses are listed, and McMurry returned home after a two week illness with a back cast following an auto accident.

Thomas Granger, Sul Ross College band leader, sold hats to raise funds for the band’s Dallas Centennial trip. Hats carry the Centennial seal on each crown side, delivered this week. Alpine residents also note a surge in cowboy boot wear among men, contrasting with indoors workers and cowboys.

Election of School Trustees In County Is Set for Tomorrow
The county votes tomorrow to elect two trustees for Alpine Independent School District No 1. Only two names appear on the ballot Otis Kimball whose term expires and V J Sith to fill the vacancy. The election will be held at Marathon Independent School District No 1 and for common school district 1. Trustees will be elected tomorrow for the Alpine district and for the Marathon district.

Severe Sand Storm Hits Highland This Week
Two days of howling west winds swept the Highland area this week with persistent sand from West Texas. It ranks as one of the season’s worst storms, blowing for about 48 hours before easing at night. Temperature dropped noticeably but officials do not expect to see damage to fruit or vegetation.

Drilling Resumed At Hovey Dome Test
Casing was set at the Dodson Means Hovey test eighteen miles northeast of Alpine and drilling is again in progress. The drill reached a depth a little over 1150 feet Wednesday morning with steady progress reported. Saturday's program includes a breakfast, sessions, and a cornstone laying at the new museum building with speakers from Sul Ross College and Texas A. & M. Science groups. The spring meeting of the Texas Academy of Science will be at the nearby theater with a cash award of $78. Everyone is invited to attend. program continues on the last page.

Valentine Elects Mayor Incorporates
FORT DAVIS April 1. Valentine citizens voted to incorporate and elected W. A. Yarbro as mayor with George Newton B. F. Morriss and John Gardner as commissioners. Incorporation aims to secure a WPA project for a water system. Forty eight votes were cast, one against. It is the first incorporated town in Jeff Davis.

Little Damage To Fruit In Hilands
Fort Davis reports two cold mornings last week caused limited fruit damage. One apricot tree showed damage but overall little fruit harmed, peaches mostly unharmed. Orchards near Alpine reported no damage and blooms rising, with optimistic prospects for peaches pears plums apples.
