Shivers Aims to Invite President for Big Bend Park Opening
Governor Allan Shivers told a Alpine Marathon delegation he will invite President Eisenhower to attend the Big Bend National Park dedication next October. He plans to be in Washington April 25 27 to extend the invitation as part of efforts to mark the park’s opening. The Brewster County group, including city officials and college leaders, appeared in Austin and received a resolution of welcome from State Senator D B Hardeman. Francois presented the governor with a scroll naming him an honorary Big Bend park ranger.

Presidio Man Injured as Pickup overturns on Highway 118
R. C. Anderson of Presidio suffered two cracked vertebrae when his pickup overturned on a new stretch of Highway 118 a few miles north of Study Butte last Sunday. A motorist brought him to Study Butte then to an Alpine hospital. His injuries were painful but not critical. He was alone when the accident occurred after the car went off the pavement and struck loose gravel on the shoulder.

Pfc. Willie V. Portillo of Alpine and 239 other U. S. Marines returned to the United States for discharge after completing service in the Far East. Portillo is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Juan T. Portillo.
Deadline Nears For 54 Car Tags
Approximately 800 1954 passenger vehicle licenses had been issued in the county through Wednesday with an estimated total of under 1200 vehicles. The final deadline to obtain 1954 licenses and attach plates is next Wednesday March 31. Auto owners are urged to secure licenses this weekend or early next week to avoid a last minute rush.
Ken Killion Wins Fourth in A&M Farm Show
Alpine student Ken Killion placed fourth in showmanship for fine wood ewes at the Little Southwestern Livestock Show and Ham Show and Auction held at Texas A&M on March 20. The Saddle and Sirloin Club hosts the annual event in the animal husbandry department. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J D Killion of Alpine.

Sutton Seeks 83rd District Attorney Post
Bruce C. Sutton of Alpine announced his candidacy for district attorney of the 83rd judicial district with a July primary in view. Born in Marfa on January 21 1927 he practiced law in Alpine after leaving the University of Texas and serving in World War II. He vows to cooperate with peace officers and county attorneys to enforce laws and uphold public safety.

Three district interscholastic league dramas staged by Crane Fort Stockton and Alpine high schools run tonight in Alpine Auditorium starting at 7 30. Alpine defending champion presents Leader of The People with cast led by Margot Fraser and Richard Klein. Crane performs The Case of the Crushed Petunias directed by Robert D Irving with Faye McCasland as Miss Simple. Fort Stockton offers ILE directed by Marilyn Chidsey featuring six students. Alpine Proclaims Rodeo Days With Mustache Spirit
The City of Alpine Texas designates March 26 to April 10 as Rodeo Days to honor Sul Ross State College and the World’s Largest Non-Professional Rodeo. The proclamation urges male citizens to grow or display facial hair and to wear western attire during the event with 150 contestants from 30 colleges.

Plans Shaping Up For Collegiate Rodeo Here In April
Committees organize the fifth National Intercollegiate rodeo to be held at Sul Ross Jackson field April 9-10 with three shows Friday night Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. Entertainers include rodeo clowns Billy LeBlanc of McNeese State and Sam Bruno of Port Arthur known as F. B. I. Bruno. New City Water Well Abandoned After Low Flow Test
The water well on John F. Lane ranch at the town edge was abandoned after a test showed 50 gallons per minute at 330 feet. Plans to drill deeper were dropped and the city commission left a new location to the incoming administration to be chosen in the April 6 election.

Pioneer Resident of Ft. Davis Dies
Edward Dutchover of Fort Davis died March 19 after a long illness. He was part of the Dutchover family descended from Diedrick Datched Dutch, one of Fort Davis’s first settlers about 104 years ago. Diedrick, born Anton Diedrick in Belgium, was recorded as Dutch all over after a misreading by a U S army recruiting sergeant. He later settled in Fort Davis around 1850, using the Slash D cattle brand. Edward was the son of Diedrick and Refugia Saldedo, with ten children from Diedrick and Refugia and eight from his second marriage to Ester Jaques. Only Annie and Cora remain living. Edward, known as Ed, had two marriages producing multiple children.

Final Sessions of District PTA Conference Held Today
The 25th annual District 15 PTA conference opened in Sul Ross Fine Arts Building with strong attendance. Around 125 registered with 100 more expected. celebrations included a Holland hotel banquet and Alpine A Cappella choir. Activities include officer reports, life memberships, and sessions led by state officers, ending with a barbecue and post conference meeting. Dust Storm Hits Alpine in Severe Overnight Event
Alpine endured its worst dust storm of the year starting early Wednesday morning and lasting nearly all night. The wind eased by morning and temperatures fell several degrees as the air cleared by press time.

Fort Pena Road To Be Paved In Colorado
Marathon to Fort Pena Colorado road, five miles south of Marathon, will be paved soon. County Judge Felix McGaughy announced plans after the court voted to pave the route.
