District PTA Conference Receives Largest Attendance Yet
The Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers district conference closed with 225 registered and about 50 visitors. Missing Alpine Trio Found Safe
Mr and Mrs Guy B Crawford and four year old Jana McMillan were found safe after a search began the night before. Their pickup got stuck near Aqua Frio ranch seventy miles south of Alpine and the family walked to an empty ranch house before being located by mid afternoon Monday.

Alpine Tops District 7A One Act Contest With Leader of the People
Alpine High School swept the District 7A play contest in Alpine auditorium on March 26 winning first place with Leader of the People and three individual honors. Cast members Bobby Clanton, Andy Owens, Glen Richburg, Mary Jo Bowden, Richard Klein and Margot Fraser earned top recognitions, including best male actor for Clanton and third best actress for Fraser. Crane and Fort Stockton followed with strong showings, while Alpine advances to the area contest in Midland on April 13.

Alpine Man Dies Of Bullet Wound
George Lines aged 65 longtime Alpine Texas cafe operator was found dead at his home with a .22 rifle beside him and a forehead wound. He had undergone Mayo Clinic surgery and lived in Alpine since 1930 with a history in cafe and tavern work. Funeral held at St James Episcopal with burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Surviving are his widow and a son Guss plus two grandchildren.

Alpine residents use record water in March
Nearly 18 million gallons flowed through Alpine meters for the month ending March 26, a sharp rise from prior months and from a year ago. Automatic pump controls were added to four city wells with more to come, and officials expect higher output as repairs and controls boost production, noting the top well on South Hill and the toy well produced large totals.

Alpine Lions club reports a minstrel show at the high school auditorium drew a large audience despite a dust storm. Gross receipts totaled 614.32 with 139.12 from cake walk and concessions. Proceeds support Eyesight Conservation. Other stagings in Marfa and Sanderson added 54.45 and 98.53 respectively, funded by a revenue-sharing plan with local clubs.

County reports 1954 vehicle licenses issued to date
A total of 1757 motor vehicles had been licensed in the county for 1954 up to Wednesday morning, per the tax collector. Wednesday was the final deadline to attach 1954 plates for on road use. Last year 1994 licenses were issued by April 1. the current total is not expected to reach that mark. Of licenses issued by Wednesday, 1189 were passenger vehicles.
Alpine Hosts 500 Students From Texas Schools
Sul Ross college will host over 500 students visiting on class trips this spring. Corpus Christi High School band stays in Lawrence hall April 1 and 2 and gives a concert April 3. Other schools include Sonora Robert Lee Rochelle Asherton Burnet Crystal City Poteet Castroville Santa Anna Millersview DeLeon Hondo Rio Grande City Johnson City Corrigan. About 100 people from Marfa Presidio Marathon Fort Stockton and Alpine attended a Wednesday ribbon ceremony at 11 30 a m to open Highway 118 from Alpine to the Big Bend West entrance near Study Butte. Officials Felix McGaughy and Lon Garrison officiated. A barbecue at Rex Ivey place followed.

Fire damages residence in Northwest Alpine
Mrs. F. P. Ful cher's home in Northwest Alpine suffered severe damage from an undetermined origin fire early last Saturday. Fire Chief Cooley said the blaze was under way when firefighters arrived and estimated the loss at $6000 with partial insurance coverage.

Alpine Cemetery Association reported gross receipts of 501 dollars from its annual barbecue dinner held last Friday at the Legion hall on West College Avenue. A total of 433 meals were served with much of the food donated, to support cemetery work.
