City adopts tentative budget of 478800 for 1970 71
City Council tentatively adopted a 1970 71 budget of 478800 up 38215 from 1969 70 with revenues offset by higher water department receipts property tax sales tax and waste collections. A public hearing is set for 4 p m Tuesday March 24 at the Municipal Building.

Death takes Col. Newsom at age 49
Graveside services for Lt. Col. Phillip L. Newsom were held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. He died in San Antonio on March 13 from a heart attack at 49. A San Antonio resident since 1967, Newsom was a WWII Air Force bombardier and later a university art major and active artist. Survivors include his wife Katherine, daughter Kathie Boyer of Denton, son Lt. Phillip A. Newsom of Mather AFB, and his mother Mrs. Florence Newsom.

Alpine Bucks and Girls Earn All-District Honors
The Alpine Bucks place two players on the GAA All-District team with sophomore Tony Enciso an All-District selection averaging 21 points and 7 rebounds in 24 games while senior Jim Pattillo earns honorable mention at 10 points and 12 rebounds per game. Alpine girls add three All-District picks senior Virginia Roberts juniors Toni Lane and Rosa Waters with sophomore Rebecca Espinoza honored. Lane averages 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. Rebecca Espinoza posts 20 points and 3 rebounds while Rebecca Espinoza and Toni Lane were named to the All-Tournament Team at Van Horn in December. Bob Edwards of the Farmers Home Administration will visit Alpine to discuss federal loans for bathroom facilities with potential long-term low interest terms. A city ordinance requires sewer hookup when available. borrowers should submit cost estimates to a contractor.
