Polio Shots Given to 300 Santa Elena Children
Three hundred pupils in the Mexican village of Santa Elena received polio diphtheria and tetanus vaccines administered by an Alpine doctor last Sunday. Local officials and Santa Elena police assisted, funded by Project Vaccine with about $50 for syringes. A second vaccination round is planned in about two months. Officials hope to extend an REA power line to Castelon to enable a modern water system.

Burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery Livingston Funeral Home directed. Survived by three daughters a son a sister sixteen grandchildren and forty one great grandchildren.

Mrs. Lurline Pulliam president of the Pilot Club of Alpine urged support for the 1961 Easter Seal Campaign. The drive aims to raise funds for treatment education and research aiding the handicapped and reached 125 city and county homes by mail last week.

Sul Ross State College Lobos will open the home baseball season at Kobernot Field Monday March 20 at 2 p.m. against Abilene Christian College. The Lobos beat SMU 9-7 in Dallas last week as Bob Becker homered to break a 6-6 tie. Herman Hudson went 5 for 5 with two doubles and Becker had three hits. Ed Wilson earned the win in relief. SMU then blanked Sul Ross 4-0 with Don Murdock allowing three hits. The Lobos traveled to Fort Worth for a two game set with Texas Christian.

Sul Ross State College senior Herman Hudson led NAIA free throw shooting with .901 on 128 of 142 attempts. He scored 398 total points this season averaging 15 per game and became the first Sul Ross athlete to earn three varsity letters in a single year across baseball basketball and football.

Val Richardson died early yesterday in an El Paso hospital after ill health of two and a half months. The Richardsons formerly owned the Antelope Lodge Motel here and moved to El Paso about ten years ago. He is survived by his widow, a son Jimmy, and a daughter Mrs. Frank Newsom Jr of El Paso. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.

County to defend Hospital Board in suits
Brewster County Commissioners Court agreed to defend Hospital Board members in any suits naming them. They approved a $250 donation to the Latin American Cemetery and $50 a month for six months to the Brewster County Eagle Club. They also authorized $75 for county judge and Commissioner Yarbro to attend the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association meeting. The court asked Charles Holmes of the State Highway Dept to report on lateral roads in the county including Alpine streets and propose improvements.
