Thelma Shoemake Chambers Dies at Alpine
Funeral services for Thelma Shoemake Chambers were held at Marathon Baptist Church with Rev. W. C. Pearce officiating. Interment followed at Marathon Cemetery. She was born in Alpine on September 24 1897 and married Pless M. Chambers on October 18 1919. Survivors include her husband five children two sisters and three brothers and several grandchildren. Pallbearers named.

Granada Theatre Reopened After Remodeling Plan

Back to School Night Opens Alpine High Week Events
Tonight Alpine High School hosts Back to School Night the finale of Texas Public School Week March 5 11. From 7:30 to 8:15 p.m parents view science displays from Centennial Central elementary and Alpine High classes. At 8:15 the Sul Ross student teachers directed choir performs followed by Superintendent Cain discussing Alpine ISD finances future planning and a Q A period. Awards uplifted by the Alpine Citizens Committee reward schools with most parents and most visitors. Cain notes this marks his final appearance after nearly a decade leading the event.

Harley May Named RCA President for 1961
Harley May, famed rodeo performer from Sul Ross State College, elected president of the Rodeo Cowboys Association for 1961. Now living in Oakdale California, he previously led RCA from 1957 to 1959 and twice won the world championship in steer wrestling, runner-up last year. Mr and Mrs Clay Holland visited Alpine friends last week as they sold their Honey Grove ranch and moved to Deming New Mexico.

All-School Talent Show Promises Globe Spanning Acts
Final arrangements are set for the annual all school talent show Around The World In 80 Minutes to be staged at 7 30 p m Friday in the Sul Ross College Auditorium. About 100 students will perform a musical and comedy revue with stage band interludes and original student planning. Tickets at 1 50 are sold by students to fund band improvements and materials.

Ramon Molinar Dies Suddenly at 39 in Alpine
Ramon Molinar 39 died of a heart attack Monday in Brewster County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Alpine he lived there all his life. He worked for J. E. Gray Jr Contractor and was a World War II veteran. Rosary was held Tuesday at Livingston Funeral Home. Mass Wednesday at 10 a.m. and funeral at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church. Survived by widow and seven children, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Vicente Molinar, three brothers Vic Raul and Joe, and three sisters Elicia Elva and Amparo, all of Alpine.

Wildenthal urges higher salaries for college teachers
Dr. Wildenthal told the House Appropriations and Senate Finance committees that Sul Ross needs substantial wage increases for faculty. He cited Texas competitive salaries and rival Western states offering 20 percent more, stressing that teaching pay drives recruitment and retention. Both HEW and the governor’s office backed Sul Ross salary requests, while the Legislative Budget Board proposed about ten percent less.
