Sul Ross State College visits Kobernot Field for a two game series against ACC. The Lobos hold a 4 2 record after beating Abilene Christian 5 0 and 10 7. Eddie Wilson earns win with a one hit showing and 10 strikeouts. Buddy Antwine and Darrell Gibbons drive in two runs apiece for Sul Ross. Bill Horlen adds a solo homer for Sul Ross. ACC’s Joel Gilbert drives in three with a ninth inning triple.
Mrs. Sam Little, RN supervisor of nurses at Brewster County Memorial Hospital, and Mrs. Jenny Pbensberger, RN surgical nurse, attend a three day seminar on hospitalization sterilization techniques at the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Worth.
Alpine Council No. 5096 of the Knights of Columbus was instituted Sunday at Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall in Midland. Gilbert J. Gilles Jr. and J. L. Samaniego led the ceremony, with Mel Middleton elected grand knight and a slate of officers chosen for the new council.
School officials announce Easter holidays from 4 p.m. Thursday March 30 with classes resuming at the usual time on Tuesday April 4.
The United States Air Force Band will perform two concerts at Sul Ross College Auditorium in Alpine on Sunday April 23 matinee at 3 30 p m and evening at 8 30 p m The tour group of about 55 musicians can swell to a 100 piece marching band or shrink to a 25 voice glee club known as the Singing Sergeants They have played worldwide and cover opera to be bop with high professional standards The Alpine Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event along with Sul Ross College and local families visited by W R Boudreaux of El Campo last week.
Alpine High School released its fall football schedule with five home games. The Bucks start at Del Rio on Sept. 1 and end the season on Nov. 11 at Marfa, with nine games listed including two byes and several home dates.

Forty five cub scouts from Pack 141 and Pack 44 with Dens 1 and 2 rode the railroad from Marfa to Alpine Monday evening to mark Railroad Month. Mothers and fathers drove the group to Marfa for the 8 07 p m train. den mothers included Mines Bob Decker Joe Lane Keesey Kimball Verdish Roy Baker accompanied as cub scoutmaster.
University of Texas coach Bill Ellington and Denver City coach Don Orr will speak at Sul Ross State College on Friday March 24. Over 109 West Texas coaches expected. Activities include a baseball game at Kokernot Park a 5 pm barbecue at Kokernot Lodge and a 7 30 pm Lobo intrasquad game in Jackson Field to wrap spring training and the coaching clinic.
Alpine officials discussed converting Berkeley Hall the former Border Patrol building for three federal agencies to rent at higher rates. GSA representative Raymond Jones outlined terms while Councilman Bob Corkins was chosen to negotiate. Two financing options were tabled: bank loan secured by rent or a bank warrant at 4 percent from April to October. No decision was reached.
The San Angelo Junior College basketball team in St. Louis lists Alpine High ex Billy Davis among its nine man traveling squad. Davis, an AHS graduate of 1959, was an honor student and athlete. his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Wally Davis.
Alpine High School head coach Pete Bromley resigns after eight years at Alpine since 1957 to pursue ranching on family holdings near Clarendon Texas. He joined Alpine as assistant in 1953 and led district champions in football baseball and girls volleyball before stepping down. He and wife Glen have three children and Bromley expects to visit periodically. School officials have not yet named a replacement.
D T Tom Farris has joined The Avalanche as foreman in charge of the printing department coming from the Ballinger Ledger. The Farris family has moved to 600 E Ave. from the previous owners R W Christian. The family includes Donna Lee Diane and Deborah Kay.
Alpine Centennial Grade School hosted a two division track meet for 7th and 8th grade boys on March 17 at Alpine High School Field. Centennial dominated the 7th grade, Fort Stockton led the 8th grade race, and results featured numerous dash, jump, and relay events. Visiting coaches praised the event and plans for an annual meet are underway.
Brewster County American Cancer Association unit distributed cancer information packets to Marathon and Alpine schools and libraries. Volunteers report rising public interest with thousands of requests in Texas last year. James Pate delivered packets publicly in Brewster County.
