Pioneer Settlement and the Bird Ranch in Alpine Texas
The Texas land rush drew settlers from the East as they pursued land in the new Empire of Texas. Among arrivals in Alpine during 1885 were Julius C. Bird and America Walker Bird, who became ranchers and local builders. Bird helped found the Alpine State Bank and supported the Paisano Encampment. The Bird Ranch remains a large Big Bend operation.
