Kiss Me Kate Opens Tonight at Sul Ross College

Sul Ross State College presents Kiss Me Kate at 8 p m on Thursday and Friday March 21 and 22 in the Main Auditorium. Eugene Laurent directs with Dr Robert Calder on music and Katharine Boyd overseeing costumes. The production features songs like Wunderbar So In Love and Too Darn Hot from the Broadway musical.

Junior Rodeo Set in July Alpine Plans Progress

Plans for Alpine to stage its first junior rodeo in July were ironed out at a breakfast meeting. Pete Shouppe, chair, said rodeos for youths 18 and under are among the country’s most popular sports, with Van Horn Maria and Sanderson hosting successful events in recent years. Alpine is expected to attract top junior talent from Texas and New Mexico, reflecting Sul Ross College rodeo prestige.

Fire Destroys Major Part Of Cathedral Mountain Lodge

Major part of Cathedral Mountain Lodge a famed Southwest guest ranch near Alpine was destroyed by a blaze in the early hours. The lodge on the Brown Ranch with six bedroom units the bunkhouse and hay barn burned along with several historical mementos. Loss estimated at 100 000 with insurance partial. DeBarbries say no immediate plans to rebuild. Fire discovered around 3 am by a ranch hand. Alpine Fire Department and Rescue Squad aided in saving parts of the property and preventing grass fires.

Alpine School Board Approves Senior Trip to Galveston

The Alpine School Board on Tuesday night approved a senior trip to Galveston this spring and mandated bus transportation with no private cars allowed. The board also approved the 1963 64 guidance program, extended contracts for all personnel, set 75 cents per meal for non school personnel in the public cafeteria, and scheduled an area school meeting for Monday April 22 in the cafeteria.

Mrs Votaw Laid to Rest in Alpine after Long Illness

Mrs L T Votaw 80 of Alpine died in Baptist Memorial Hospital San Angelo Friday night March 15 after months of illness. Funeral at First Methodist Church Alpine officiated by Rev Clyde Chesnutt with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survived by sons Frank and Reginald Votaw and sister Rosa Middleton. Born Clara May Carnes November 30 1882 in Evergreen Texas. Married L T Votaw November 14 1901 in Wharton. Moved to Alpine in 1911. Years with Magnolia petroleum and Goodyear dealer founder Brewster County Motors 1934. Husband died 1940. She suffered a stroke February 1961. Absentee voting for city election continues through March 29.
