Southeastward extension of the Guadalupe mountains about 40 miles long. Names explain old ranges and passes, with elevations and historical notes. Dryden, Del Norte Gap, Doubtful Canyon, Dugout Creek and Dugout Mountain described along with Dryden Crossing and El Paso details. Cemetery Assn. meeting announced for Alpine.
Harriet Hord of Alpine won a $75 cash award at the Granada theatre on Money Night this week. The venue announces a $25 cash prize at its next event scheduled for next Tuesday night.
Local officers seek a gypsy family who left Alpine last month after allegedly swindling Antonio Encino, a Santa Fe railroad section hand, out of about 130 dollars. A gypsy woman ran a downtown fortune telling booth and claimed sewing the money into bedding would cure his illness. The money was found sewn into a mattress bag of paper. the band has not been located. Encino has been ill for some time.
Meriwether Burke plans a new grocery and market in the Wilson building on North Fifth street next Tuesday. Burke, with several years in local grocery work with Alpine Mercantile, will offer staples produce fruits and fresh meats in a remodeled modern space. He seeds a $25 prize for the best name for the new business, with contest details in the Avalanche page three ad. The Volunteer Fire Department answered a chimney fire at D N Scott cottage on East College avenue early Wednesday with no damage. the home is occupied by E H Robertson and family.
The Alpine Internationals, a local Mexican baseball club, will begin practice next week. Members say new uniforms are planned for the opening game and Alpine citizens contributed toward equipment. The club aims for strong home games and another winning season after a largely successful previous year.
A black helper, Roland Rhoade, uncovered odd items beneath floorboards at the old Fort Davis army post. The cache included a bell a book empty cigarette packs and 1891 newspapers from Kansas City Times San Antonio Express and New York Mercury. Also found were fragments of architect drawings and old buckles alongside a New York Mercury front page with Kaiser kisses Wales and Victoria burial notes.
The Sul Ross college band sponsors a baby show at Granada theatre next Wednesday night. An engraved silver loving cup will be awarded to the audience voted most perfect baby under five. A master of ceremonies will introduce each entrant. a feature picture will be shown. Entries must be submitted to band director Thos B Granger by Tuesday. Half of pre show ticket sales go to the band. Col John Perkins of Midland visited Monday.
The Sul Ross Lobo basketball team leaves with Coach B C Graves for Denver to participate in the national A A U tournament starting Monday. About 50 amateur teams are entered, including top national squads. Graves takes ten players. the Lobos, recently healthy, face strong opposition and hopeful chances in the big event.
The regular chamber of commerce banquet will be Monday at 7:30 PM at the Holland Hotel with Rotary Club in charge and J W Frazer overseeing the program Plates are 60 cents. reservations by 10 AM Monday. Alpine Marathon school groups will attend a county meet here this afternoon and tonight with multiple contests and events at various venues.
Applications for old age assistance in District 20 are coming in slowly compared with other districts across the state, according to a statement by Dennis M. Poe district supervisor. District 20 covers El Paso Hudspeth Culberson Winkler Loving Reeves Ward Presidio Jeff Davis and Brewster counties. To avoid delays, eligible applicants are urged to file promptly.
A. Stone, president of Alpine Mining Co, says the SEC has approved a $100000 stock sale. Of proceeds 20 percent to brokerage, 30 percent to secure approved securities for 20 years, 50 percent to develop company properties. Funds will be deposited with The First National Bank. The company plans to list on principal exchanges via a major brokerage with offices in Los Angeles Chicago and New York.
The American Legion Auxiliary presented an Amateur Hour and country store at the Granada theatre Wednesday evening to a packed house. Miss Ida Beth Meador of Alpine won the $5 best amateur award. Participants hailed from Alpine, Marathon, and Marfa. The group reports profits and thanks sponsors, the theatre, Texas Theatre, and the public for support.
The city commission announced an April 7 election to select a mayor and two commissioners for two years. Mayor T. R. Moody and Commissioner L. B. Starns plan to seek re election. Commissioner Felix McGaughy will not run. F. L. McCollum will run for the vacant seat. Voting will take place in the city offices in the Hord building.
Show director Ray McNeill and band director Thos B Granger announce the Sul Ross band will stage its second annual minstrel on May 4. Proceeds fund sweaters for band members with further details to follow.
County commissioners took no action on a petition filed last week seeking a vote on a $15,000 warrant issue to aid the city in obtaining right of way for re routing U S highway 90 through the west part of the city. The board recessed Monday and will reconsider the petition later this month.
City crews install 30 new stop signs this week replacing worn or destroyed signs. Signs will be placed at locations previously indicated by painted pavement aprons. The signs are heavy reinforced rubber with yellow lettering on black, set in the paving with concrete.
About ten percent of the 1935 motor vehicles registered have been licensed to date. County tax collector records show 156 licenses issued yesterday, far short of last year’s roughly 1500. To date 100 of an estimated 2000 drivers’ licenses have been issued. April 1 sets the final date for securing either drivers or car licenses.
W. Ray, prominent Marfa businessman, died here Monday night after an emergency operation for appendicitis. He had a long career with Edwards market and the Hord Williams store meat market in Marfa since 1929. He is survived by his widow and two daughters. The body was shipped to Marfa for burial Tuesday.
Old timer John A. Weyerts of Alpine marks fifty years in the town since arriving from Medina County in 1886. He notes March 2 was also his seventy-fifth birthday, recalls German origins, carpentry work, and a memorable welcome by cow punchers when he stepped off the train wearing a derby hat.
Mrs. Sport Gunn of Abilene visits her parents Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Taylor and Jamily during a hometown stay.
Heavy rains last week soaked much of the county with higher totals in the south. Creeks ran and tanks filled in the lower county. More showers Thursday west of Alpine filled tanks in the mountains and Greenlee country. Alpine reported 34 inches on Monday. a cold front arrived Tuesday.
Good progress was reported at the Dodson-Means test well 18 miles northeast of Alpine with drilling under way at a depth of over 900 feet. The test on Sec 66 block 10 GHASA By survey is the only well being drilled in this county at this time.
The High School Band Parents' club was organized at a Wednesday afternoon meeting in the college. Officers elected include Wells McIntyre as first vice president, Mrs M L Hopson as second vice president, Mrs Harold Thompson as secretary, and Mrs HLL Kokemot as treasurer. The group plans regular monthly meetings and aims to support the Alpine band with upcoming contests and programs. About 40 band parents attended the gathering.
The Bluebonnet Study Club annual plant and bulb exchange will take place tomorrow at the Old Mission cafe building on East Holland Avenue. A bake sale will accompany the event. Bring bulbs or plants to exchange to the stated location tomorrow.
The election in neighboring Marfa last Saturday approved liquor sales by 214 to 146. Marfa had remained dry under local option since 1909 with little voter interest reflected in the small turnout.
