An increase in new motor vehicle registrations was noted in the county for February with 18 licenses issued, seven more than January. The February list includes Alpine residents Todd Patton Ford Plymouth sedan H L Kokernot Jr Alpine Plymouth sedan and others from Alpine Sanderson El Paso Marathon Ft Davis and Ft Worth area with various makes and models.

City Drug Store move tied to 15000 warrant vote
A petition with about 125 names urged county commissioners to vote on issuing 15000 in warrants to help the city obtain right of way for rerouting U S highway No 9. Action awaits the next regular meeting. The move accompanies Alpine project linked highway improvements and a relocation of The City Drug Store to the Holland block on Holland Avenue with plans for expanded stock.

Born April 25, 1875 in Washington county Texas he lived in Sealy Austin county before moving to San Antonio for real estate work. Survived by son Leonard Beaumont daughter Grace Oklahoma wife died 23 years ago and three brothers Dr T W Stone Mineral Wells J A Stone Richmond and S L Stone a rancher north of here. Funeral 2 30 Sunday Elm Grove cemetery officiated by Rev Buren Sparks.

Tax collector reports 865 driver licenses issued to date with over 2 000 more expected before the final registration date. Auto licenses show 73 issued of an estimated 1 500 vehicles as April 1 deadline approaches for plates.
Paso Team Region 8 Champions Defeat Fort Stockton Tigers
El Paso High school Tigers edged Fort Stockton Panthers 29 to 27 in the Texas Interscholastic League region meet last Saturday. Panthers, missing Barbour, challenged the Tigers and kept the game close, as Marcus Connally, former Sul Ross athlete and now principal, was noted in coverage.

Highland New Theatre Will Open in Alpine Area
A slow rain drenched the Trans-Pecos area on Monday with four inches in Alpine and surrounding regions, boosting pasture and creeks. Alpine’s new Texas Theatre will open next Thursday with Joan Bennett and George Raft in She Couldn’t Take It, plus a comedy. Goodall sound equipment touted as the best.

Funeral services for Ira Melvin Conley age 60 were held at Livingston Funeral Home in this city. Conley died in Los Angeles on February 19 and was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery after a service led by Rev. D. J. Murray, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. He was the father of Mrs. Chas Fisher of this city.

Sul Ross basketball, weakened by injuries to Morris and Bagwell, fell behind early in game one but fought back to a 45-39 loss. The next night the Lobos trailed by 10 at halftime yet surged to a final two-point margin in a 43-41 defeat, following a tough series against a well-coached Texas Wesleyan club. The Lobos, recent Alamo Conference champions, have won 15 of 19 this season despite spring injuries and key absences.

Road West Work Starts on Alpine Marfa Highway Project
Work on the Alpine Marfa highway paving project began with prep at the west end. A 1 8 mile base section was let in January to contractor W W Vann of Kerrville. Completion targeted for later phases with Alpine topping to follow from that end.

Members of the Highland Hereford Association in Brewster County met at the Holland hotel with fifty five attending and others dropping in. Dr. J E Wright chaired. Ernest Gibbons reported calf arrangements for the Dallas 4 H show. A J Hoffman noted steady membership growth. WB Mitchell outlined goals to organize the breed and find markets. The group endorsed seals on letterheads and pledged to supply three papers with member business data.

Crevices caused delays but operators pursued a straight hole with care, on Sec 66 block 10 GH and SA Ry survey, Jeff Davis county west of Marfa, with earlier delays noted at Sec 8 block 3 HATE Ry survey.

Increased Interest in Highland Hereford Cattle Association
Fort Davis reports rising interest and membership in the Highland Hereford association covering Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Presidio counties. About sixty members attended a Alpine luncheon as new president W. B. Mitchell presided, with J. W. Merrill noting growth from the 1918 founding cost of 100 dollars and five cents per calf annual dues to today’s ten dollar join fee and ten cents per calf. The group plans advertising to boost Flightland calf reputation, and a cent-per-pound premium has benefited many sellers. A special certificate may be issued for each carload shipped, and the forthcoming Dallas Centennial will feature exclusively Highland Herefords.
